28th Annual CIAA Women’s Basketball Tournament Monday, February 25, 2002 TURNOVERS, MISSED FREE THROWS TAME TIGERS IN LIVINGSTONE WINRALEIGH, NC - Saint Paul's College committed 34 turnovers and went 12 for 27 from the free throw line as Livingstone College cruised to a 76-53 victory in the opening game of the 2002 CIAA Women's Basketball Tournament at the Entertainment and Sports Arena in Raleigh, NC. The Blue Bears, the number four seed from the Western Division, conversely were able to take care of business from the free throw line as they converted 27 of 39. They were also able to force 34 Lady Tiger turnovers. "That was the key to the game," said Lady Blue Bears' head coach Andrew Mitchell. "We wanted to come out and play aggressive defense." Livingstone forward Robyn Wright led all scorers with 18 points. All-conference point guard Angela Thomas dropped 15 points and five assists on the Lady Tigers and senior Erica Deas added 14 points and five steals. Livingstone jumped out to a 26-11 advantage following a basket by Emmerita Foster at 7:09. St. Paul's answered with a 10-0 run to cut the Lady Tiger deficit to five points (26-21) when Shamea Hall scored her sixth straight point at 3:29. The Lady Blue Bears then closed out the half by outscoring SPC 9-3 to take a 35-24 cushion into the locker room. Hall led the Lady Tigers with 12 points, Rochaunda Saunders had 10 points and eight rebounds while Gail Allen chipped in with four assists and three steals. The Lady Blue Bears will now take on the Eastern Division champion Trojanettes of Virginia State University on Tuesday at 1 p.m.
