Super Saturday Doesn't DisappointMarch 3, 2002
Cheerleaders, a three-point contest, Battle of the Bands and much more were a part of Super Saturday for the 2002 CIAA Basketball Tournament. The three-point contest opened the day’s events for both men and women. The 2002 Women’s champion was Raquita Washington, of Elizabeth City State University while Amina McGhee and Chiante Wester both of Shaw University took second and third place. Jerome LaGrange and J.C. Henry of Livingstone College took 1st and 3rd place for the Men’s three-point shoot-out. Derick Singleton of Saint Paul’s College placed second. The Women’s Legends game was a crowd favorite. The West defeated the East, 56-45. The Most Valuable Player for the West was Tammy Brown of Fayetteville State University. Doris Moncreif of Virginia State (East Team) and Timita Vick of St. Augustine’s College (West) won Most Outstanding Player awards for their respective teams. In the Men’s Legends game, the East got off to a slow start in first half but established an inside game that took control as they cruised to a 62-50 win over the West. Curtis Reed of Shaw University took Most Valuable Player honors, and also Most Outstanding Player for the East. Bill Tibbs of Johnson C. Smith won Most Outstanding Player for the West. The Cheerleaders Exhibition was a much anticipated event and all of the school’s squads represented. Bowie State University’s Band gave the crowd old school and new school sounds, and even a little gospel to uplift those in attendance. |
