WRDC-Raleigh Named CIAA Flagship Television Station

Raleigh, NC -- The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association has designated WRDC, UPN 28, Raleigh, NC as the official over-the-air Flagship Station of the CIAA Television Network, produced by Street & Smith's Productions of Charlotte, NC. The announcement came in conjunction with the annual CIAA Basketball Kick-off Luncheon.

WRDC will furnish coverage of all five (5) regular season CIAA Basketball Games, and the 2000 CIAA Championship Tournament from the Raleigh Entertainment & Sports Arena March 2nd, 3rd and 4th. The tournament coverage will include the men's quarterfinals March 2nd, the men's semifinals on the 3rd, and both the men's and women's finals on Saturday March 4, 2000.

"We are truly excited to make this announcement today", said CIAA Commissioner Leon Kerry. "WRDC has been a driving force in promoting CIAA athletics in the Research Triangle, and this long-term relationship should help expand their coverage of our outstanding student-athletes."

Susan Lucas, General Manager of WRDC-TV UPN 28 says, "We are delighted to broadcast for the second year this historic tournament showcasing the CIAA men's and women's basketball tournament. We are doubly proud that this tournament will be played in the Raleigh Entertainment and Sports Arena. UPN 28 is just apart of Raleigh's business and community leaders who welcome CIAA athletes, students, alumni and friends to this celebration."

The regular season games will begin with the Legacy Classic in Charlotte, NC Saturday, January 15th featuring North Carolina Central vs. Johnson C. Smith at the Charlotte Coliseum. The next evening Virginia Union meets Virginia State in the Freedom Classic in the Richmond Coliseum.

The CIAA Television Network helps honor Black History Month with the Saturday February 5th Winston-Salem State vs. North Carolina Central game from Durham as part of the Martin Luther King Classic.

Winston-Salem State, the 1999 CIAA Tournament Champions will make their second appearance when they travel to Fayetteville State on February 19th for an important CIAA matchup. Virginia Union and Elizabeth City State will meet on February 26th to close the regular season schedule with their battle for a possible top tournament seeding in the Eastern Division race.
