Raleigh, N.C. (Jan. 10, 2000) - As February 28 draws closer, so too does the inaugural playing of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Tournament in Raleigh's new Sports and Entertainment Arena. With an estimated economic impact of more than $26 million over the next three years, the local steering committee for the week-long event has prepared itself and the city for the for what they hope will become a cultural tradition for years to come.

The steering committee is made up of several subcommittees, each assigned specific tasks and responsibilities. The Hospitality and Events Committee, headed by Helga Greenfield, Vice President for Institutional Advancement at Shaw University, works to ensure that then- is something for everyone, from their arrival Sunday, Feb. 27 through their departure a week later Greenfield and her committee have arranged everything from halftime entertainment to airport signage to "greeting ambassadors" located throughout Raleigh, making sure that the city is ready to host the party that is the CIAA The committee has also coordinated the fashion show, High School Day, T-Shirt Day, and most importantly, parking and handicap accessibility for all events.

The Dining and Entertainment Committee, chaired by Ed Stewart, Executive Director of Community Development Corporation, has implemented educational and training programs at local hotels and restaurants to better cater to the CIAA fan- Restaurants willing to extend operating hours and offer appropriate menus have been designated as "CIAA restaurants," features such as late-night menus, evening entertainment in hotel lobbies and additional check-in and checkout are to designed to make a hospitable area even more so," said.

The purpose of the CIAA Public Relations Committee, headed by Vernon Malone of the Wake County Board of Commissioners and David Gwyn of Richard French & Associates, is to generate excitement and positive publicity for the CIAA tournament and the City of Raleigh in the event's first year in the capital city.
