Hampton, VA – The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association is in the planning stages of the annual spring sports championships.
Fayetteville State University will host both the golf and softball championships. Round one of the 18 hole golf championship begins on April 13 at Willow Lakes Golf Course and will resume on the 14th with the second round of play. Fayetteville State University will defend their title as they have claimed this championship each year since 1993.
Softball action cranks up at the Veterans Softball Complex on Thursday, April 13 at 12:00 noon and continues through the championship game on the 15th. The top four teams in each division will vie for the championship crown. Last year N.C. Central took the title back to Durham for the second consecutive year.
Track and Field championships will be hosted by Virginia Union University in Richmond, VA on April 14-15. The event will be held at the Sports Backer Stadium on the Richard B. Hollander Track. Start times are 12:00 noon on the 14th and 10:00 am on the 15th. The men and women of St. Augustine's College are the teams to watch, as they are the track and field powerhouses of the conference. Both the Falcons and Lady Falcons claimed championship honors last year.
Tennis will be hosted by North Carolina Central University in Durham, NC. Matches will begin on March 14 and will be held at East End and Elmira Parks. In the event of inclement weather the championship will be moved to the Chapel Hill Tennis Club. Johnson C. Smith University swept through the championship last year to claim the title for the first time in history.
Baseball will be held April 27-29 in Petersburg. Virginia State University will host the event at the Whaley M. Colbert Field and Shepherd Stadium. Defending champion, St. Augustine's, College will fight to claim the title again this year. Each of the six baseball playing institutions will compete in the double elimination championship.
