The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association's Executive Committee reviewed nominations today to select CIAA coaches of the year for spring sports. In review of this year's coaches recommendations, the Executive Committee took into consideration current year's performance, athletic improvement, and results of the 1999-00 championship events.
Coach Michael Winbush of Winston-Salem State University was chosen as the CIAA Softball Coach of the Year. Winbush led the Lady Rams to a 32-2 overall record and went 13-1 in the conference. Winston-Salem State claimed the Western Division championship and the CIAA title this campaign.
Coach Herb Wheat, Virginia State University was selected CIAA Baseball Coach of the Year. The Trojans finished 15-5 in the conference and 26-15 overall. Wheat led his Trojan squad to a regular season conference championship and the CIAA Championship title this year.
St. Augustine's College took both the 2000 CIAA Men's & Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championship, a repeat from last season. Coach George Williams was named the CIAA Coach of the Year for Men's & Women's Track and Field.
Claiming CIAA Golf Coach of the Year is St. Augustine's College, Lawrence Coleman. St. Augustine's won the 2000 Championship for the first time since 1992, finishing with a score of 511 team points.
The Committee selected Coach James Cuthbertson, Johnson C. Smith University, as the 2000 CIAA Tennis Coach of the Year. The Golden Bulls were undefeated in the conference posting an impressive 14-0 record. They finished 24-7 overall and captured the CIAA Tennis Championship for the second consecutive season.
The 1999-00 CIAA Coaches of the Year will be honored at the annual CIAA Coach of the Year Luncheon on May 19 at 1:00 pm at the Holiday Inn in Hampton, VA.
