3rd ANNUAL PIONEER BOWL SET
PRESS CONFERENCE SCHEDULED FOR DECEMBER 16

The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association will take on Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association in the 3rd Annual Pioneer Bowl on December 18, 1999. The post-season Bowl game will take place at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, GA - kick off at 6:00 PM. A press conference has been set for December 16, 1999 at 2:00 PM at the Georgia Dome.

Pioneer Bowl Logo Winston-Salem State University (7-0 CIAA, 7-3 Overall) will take on Tuskegee University (5-1 SIAC, 9-2 Overall) at this year's Pioneer Bowl. The Winston-Salem State Rams are the CIAA champion and are hungry for a win at the Bowl. The SIAC leads the CIAA 2-0 in Pioneer Bowl action. Livingstone College, was the CIAA's representative in both 1997 & 1998 and was defeated by Kentucky State and Tuskegee, respectively.

WSSU went undefeated in the conference, suffering close losses to NCAA Div I-AA opponents , N.C. A&T, (20-7), Grambling (25-23) in the Gold Coast Classic in San Diego, CA; and NCAA Div II opponent Catawba (17-14), who are currently ranked #2 in the South Atlantic Region. The Rams bring a wealth of talent and experience to the gridiron. CIAA Defensive Player of the Year, Thomas Washington, Winston-Salem State's is a defensive line standout. The senior completed the regular season with 58 tackles (34 UT, 24 AT), 18 for a loss of 94 yards and 10 sacks for 60 yards. The Ram's leading rusher and All-CIAA team member, Terrie Newkirk ran for 1083 yards on 231 attempts and 10 tds. Quarterback ,Tory Woodbury, directs this team, completing 65 of 159 passes for 792 yards.

The Tuskegee University Tigers took losses to Alabama A&M (54-0) and Ft. Valley State (31-28) this season. The 1999 SIAC Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year both come from this squad. Michael Scott, running back, was named the conference's Offensive Player of the Year. Scott netted 1,346 yards on 246 attempts and 13 Tds. On the other side of the field, junior, Kevin Powell took down 128 opponents (56 UT, 72 AT) this season. Both lead their team as they travel to Atlanta to defend the SIAC's title at the Bowl.
