The Rams of Winston-Salem State (4-0, 4-2) recorded their fourth consecutive conference win this season against N.C. Central (2-2, 3-4) during the 2nd Annual Midway Classic. Quarterback Tory Woodbury completed 6 passes for 80 yards and a touchdown. Chris McGowen was the receiver for the 32-yard pass. Terrie Newkirk led the rushing attack with 28 carries for 121 yards. Shawn Thomas had two successful field goals in the game to aid in the win. N.C. Central scored in the 1st quarter with a run by quarterback Darrell Nesbitt. Junior Bulla rushed 103 yards on 17 carries. Anthony Connally did not neglect his defensive duties despite the loss. He recorded 18 tackles ( 12 solo, 6 assisted) in the game.
Livingstone (1-3, 3-4) redeemed themselves this weekend by coming to Johnson C. Smith (1-3, 1-6) and defeating them 30-8. D’Andre Hopper completed 8 of 12 passes for 125 yards and was the leading rusher with 17 carries for 111 yards. Carlton Jones came alive in the fourth quarter scoring two (2) touchdowns for the Blue Bears. Livingstone gained 423 offensive yards in the game. Johnson C. Smith’s Jamad Woods scored their only touchdown late in the fourth quarter with a 51-yard pass from Spencer Mayo. Mayo completed 7 passes for 124 yards in the Golden Bull effort. Defensively, Angel Rivera had 16 tackles.
With a week off, Bowie State (2-2, 3-3) returned to the playing field to beat Elizabeth City State (0-4, 0-7), 20-6. T-Wuan Prather carried 11 times for 71 yards and a touchdown and Dean Trammel had 13 carries for 58 yards and a TD for the Bulldogs. Quarterback Jimmy Whitehead completed eight (8) passes for 130 yards and a touchdown in the game. Kendal Stewart and Sonny Pritchett were the defensive leaders with eight (8) tackles each. Viking Conan Stevenson rushed 51 yards on 13 carries and had a touchdown. Michael Forbes completed 15 of 36 passes for 119 yards. Alvin Wilson recorded 15 tackles (7 solo, 8 assisted) against the Bulldogs.
Virginia State (3-0, 4-2) torched Fayetteville State (1-3, 1-6), 50-7, at home Saturday. Damon Thompson was all over the field against the Broncos. He had 7 catches for 161 yards and three (3) touchdowns, 2 carries for 6 yards, a returned a kickoff for 25 yards and returned eight (8) punts for 151 yards, one for a touchdown. He scored three (3) touchdowns in the first quarter alone. Quarterback Antonio Hawkins completed 11 passes for 223 yards and two (2) touchdowns. Troy Lee also contributed two (2) touchdowns in the games while only having three ( 3) rushing attempts. Virginia State held Fayetteville State to only 101 total offensive yards. Timothy Adams scored for his squad in the 2nd quarter on a 1-yard run. Terrence Wilson registered 13 tackles (8 solo, 5 assisted).
