Virginia Union Celebrates Homecoming Win Against Elizabeth City State

The Panthers of Virginia Union (3-1, 4-2) celebrated their Homecoming crushing Elizabeth City State (0-3, 0-6), 40-6. Andre Braxton was the leading rusher for the Panthers with 135 yards on 15 carries and three (3) touchdowns. Quarterback Jasun Thompson finished the day with 15 completions for 221 yards and two (2) touchdowns. Elizabeth City State allowed Virginia Union 508 (288 rushing, 220 passing) total offensive yards in the contest. The only touchdown for the Vikings came during the 4th quarter with a 48- yard touchdown pass from quarterback Percell Knight. Knight ended the game with 5 completions for 70 yards. Alvin Wilson was the leading defensive player with 13 tackles (4 solo, 9 assisted), three (3) for a loss of 10 yards and a fumble recovery.

N.C. Central (2-1, 3-3) faced Fayetteville State (1-2, 1-5) at home Saturday and defeated them, 32-7. On the ground, Junior Bulla led the Eagles with 17 carries for 141 yards and a touchdown. Sakwana Dickens and Darrell Nesbitt also added 155 combined yards to compute the 352 total yards of offense amassed by N.C. Central. Nesbitt, who is a quarterback, also had 2 completed passes for 105 yards and two (2) touchdowns. Darrell Sanders was the receiver who executed the passes from Nesbitt and received weekly honors for his performance. In the 2nd quarter, Fayetteville State quarterback Daryl Greer successfully completed a pass to Mark Green for a touchdown. Green had 8 catches for 154 yards in the game. Defensively, Jarvis Davis tallied 15 tackles (9 solo, 6 assisted) for the Bronco effort.

Winston-Salem State (3-0, 3-2) journeyed to Statesville and ousted Livingstone (1-3, 2-4), 34-0. The Rams scored within the first five minutes of play with a 21-yard run from Terrie Newkirk . Newkirk was the led the rushing attack with 21 carries for 74 yards and three (3) touchdowns. Quarterback Tory Woodbury was 5 for 8 on the day and gained 105 passing yards. Shawn Thomas, the leading field goal kicker in the conference, had two (2) during the game. His longest being 38 yards. Anthony Hines had a 82-yard punt return for the Rams. Livingstone had 215 total offensive yards in the game. D'Andre Hopper, in his role as quarterback, had 5 completions for 57 yards. He also rushed 41 yards on 22 carries.

Outside of the conference, Johnson C. Smith (1-2, 1-5) met with Bethune-Cookman in Daytona Beach, FL and were defeated, 26-6. Jimmy Bell made the only touchdown for the Golden Bulls with a 19-yard rush for a touchdown in the 2nd quarter. He ended the day with 14 carries for 83 yards. Quarterback Spencer Mayo had 3 completions for 59 yards and an interception. Defensively, Damon Saunders tackled 10 (5 solo, 5 assisted) Wildcats in the game.
