Bowie State (1-0, 2-1) nabbed a come-back victory Saturday against Johnson C. Smith (0-2, 0-3) quelling them 23-19. Quarterback Jimmy Whitehead sealed the win with a 23-yard touchdown pass to Michael Bryant late in the 4th quarter. Whitehead completed 8 of 24 passes for 95 yards with two interceptions and two touchdowns. Ray Hawkins was the leading rusher with 21 carries for 100 yards and a TD. Sonny Pritchett received weekly honors for his defensive efforts finishing with 13 tackles (7 solo, 6 assisted). The Golden Bulls gained 352 yards (193 rushing, 159 passing) against the Bulldogs. Jimmy Bell was the leading rusher, carrying the ball 16 times for 83 yards and a touchdown. Craig Brown had 3 catches for 104 yards and a touchdown to lead the receivers. Defensively, Antonio Jamison took down 14 (8 solo, 6 assisted) Bulldogs to assist in the effort.
Virginia State (2-0, 2-1) came back from a 14-point deficit in the second quarter to overthrow N.C. Central (0-1, 0-3), 35-28, in overtime. The Trojans came under attack after N.C. Central scored their first two touchdowns. The pressure caused them to react with a 16-yard touchdown pass from Antonio Hawkins to Jerwade Lloyd (8 catches, 154 yards) with 22 seconds left in the quarter. Hawkins completed 18 of 27 pass attempts for 331 yards and 2 touchdowns in the game. The Eagles had to resort to a rushing game which was led by Junior Bulla who had 19 carries for 98 yards and a touchdown. Touchdowns were also made by Myron Flowers, Cheo Johnson and Sakwan Dickens. On defense, Anthony Connally had 12 tackles, (5 solo, 7 assisted).
Virginia Union (1-0, 2-1) ousted Livingstone (0-1, 1-2), 24-6, to secure their first conference win this season. Panther, Diran Cowell, scored the first TD to put his squad on the board. Cowell ended the day with 12 carries for 89 yards. The leading rusher was Mackise London who had 21 carries for 92 yards and a touchdown. In the 4th quarter, receiver Kofi Cathcart caught a 47 yard pass from quarterback Jerome Haskett to seal the win. Ralph Hunter and Lashawn. Pugh were the mainstays on defense, taking down 9 (4 solo, 5 assisted) and 7 (3 solo, 4 assisted) opponents, respectively. The Fighting Bears only successful touchdown drive came in the 2nd quarter with a 2-yard run from D'Andre Hopper.
In non-conference action, Elizabeth City State (0-1, 0-4) remains winless after succumbing to Cheyney, 12-7. The Vikings were held to only 126 total yards during the contest. The sole touchdown was made by Derrick Watkins who had a 5-yard blocked punt return. The leading defensive players were John Joseph with 13 tackles ( 4 solo, 9 assisted) and Alvin Wilson with 12 tackles (5 solo, 7 assisted).
