By Taleasha Reavis

Johnson C. Smith (0-1, 0-2) met with conference opponent Virginia State (1-0, 1-1) on Saturday and was edged out 26-6. Playing in much better weather conditions than last week, the Trojans took advantage of the pleasantries during the second quarter and came away with 24 points. The Trojans walked away with 122 rushing yards and 138 rushing yards. Damon Thompson caught two touchdown receptions and was 5 for 82 yards in total receptions. Quarterback Antonio Hawkins completed 13 of 22 passes for 138 yards and two touchdowns. Hawkins also rushed for a touchdown during the game. Place kicker Isaac Johnson proved resourceful by successfully kicking two field goals to aid in the win. Smith's Craig Brown scored the sole touchdown for the Golden Bulls by catching a 44-yard pass from quarterback Spencer Mayo. Regg Broughton took down 12 Trojans (7 solo, 5 assisted) in the game.

Fayetteville State (1-0, 1-2) came from behind to secure a victory over Elizabeth City State (0-1, 0-3), 13-6, on their home turf. The Broncos used a somewhat balanced attack against the Vikings gaining 176 yards on the ground and 171 yards in the air. Rayshawn Askew, Elizabeth City State, scored the initial touchdown of the game to start the charge for the Vikings but, unfortunately, that's where the charge ended. Fayetteville State quarterback Chris Stewart's passes successfully found the hands of Andrae Rice who secured the winning touchdowns for the Broncos. Defensively, Jamie Bembry finished the day with 15 tackles (7 solo, 8 assisted), 3 for a loss of 16 yards, 2 forced fumbles, and 2 fumble recoveries.

In non-conference action, Virginia Union (0-0, 1-1) spanked Cheyney, 41-12. The Panthers gained 330 total yards against Cheyney. Andre Braxton was the leading rusher acquiring 101 yards on 20 carries and a touchdown. Diran Cowell also scored two touchdowns while gaining 46 yards on 9 carries.

Livingstone (0-0, 1-1) traveled to South Carolina to overthrow Newberry College, 37-34, in overtime. In the fourth quarter, the Fighting Bears rallied to come back from a 27-12 deficit and scored 22 points to tie the game. Jim Terry sealed the win with a field goal in the last seconds of play. Livingstone gained 451 yards in the game (251 rushing, 200 passing). Terry Galloway racked up 15 tackles to lead the defense; thirteen (13) were solo tackles.

Winston-Salem State (0-0, 0-2) lost their second game of the season to North Carolina A&T, 20-7. The Rams scored only one touchdown on Saturday, which was credited to quarterback Tory Woodbury who opted to run for 5-yards in the second quarter.

N.C. Central (0-0, 0-2) remains winless after succumbing to Gardner-Webb, 16-0. Gardner-Webb kept the Eagles to only 38 passing yards, which forced them to utilize their ground attack. Darrell Nesbitt was the leading rusher with 48 yards on 10 carries. The Eagles could not manage to keep their hands on the ball during the game, which made their efforts futile.

Bowie State (0-0, 1-1) took their first beating this year from Millersville, 41-0. Quarterback Jimmy Whitehead tried to engineer a winning drive in the third quarter, going 70 yards in 12 plays, but was sacked at the opponents' 10-yard line. The Bulldogs could only muster 149 total yards against the Millersville Marauders.
