The Trojans of Virginia State (0-0, 0-1) ended their seven-game winning streak and lost 19-7 to the Norfolk State Spartans at the 11th Annual Labor Day Classic. The extensive rain and high winds in the Tidewater area caused the game to be dubbed the "Mud Bowl". Quarterback Antonio Hawkins completed 9 of 26 passes for 101 yards and had 7 carries for 17 yards. Defensively, Kevin Parker had 8 tackles (7 solo, 1 assisted), three for a loss of 17 yards and a sack for a loss of 14 yards.
Saturday was a huge success for the Bulldogs of Bowie State (0-0, 1-0) and first year coach Henry Frazier as they defeated Cheyney, 20-6. The Bulldogs held the lead during the entire game, leading 13-6 at the half. Tailback Ray Hawkins rushed for 79 yards on 23 carries and scored two touchdowns. He also totaled 61 yards on two punts and one kickoff return. The leading tackler was Lee Best who had ten tackles (5 solo, 5 assisted), 4 for a loss of 14 yards.
In Winston-Salem State's (0-0, 0-1) season opener, the Rams met Catawba at home and lost 17-14. The Rams did not come alive until the 4th quarter with a 18-yard touchdown pass from Tory Woodbury to Dontriez Chapman. Terrie Newkirk was the leading rusher with 67 yards on 13 carries and scored the final touchdown of the game for his squad. Nick Davis and Chris Ebron were the leading tacklers with ten tackles each.
Virginia Union (0-0, 0-1) traveled to Lynchburg, VA to meet Liberty only to be foiled 21- 12. The Panthers had 212 yards on the day (108 rushing and 104 passing). Quarterback Jasun Thompson completed 15 of 26 passes for 104 yards and had one touchdown. Punter Jerome Haskett scored the first 6 points of the game with two field goals at the beginning of the 1st and 2nd quarters. On defense, Tommie Dawson recorded 10 tackles (9 solo, 1 assisted). Senior Farrel Payton also tallied 10 tackles (8 solo, 2 assisted), two for a loss of 16 yards, a fumble recovery and a sack for 13 yards.
Fayetteville State (0-0, 0-1) stepped out of conference and faced Division I-AA leader Georgia Southern only to be annihilated 76-0. Quarterback Chris Stewart completed 15 of 36 passes for 177 yards to no avail for the Broncos. The longest launch was to Mark Green who caught the 62-yard pass. The Broncos were held to only 21 rushing and 177 passing yards during the contest.
On Thursday, the Blue Bears of Livingstone College (0-0, 0-1) traveled to Greenville, TN to face Tusculum. They lost the game by only two points, 11-9. Sophomore Carlton Jones had 16 carries for 140 yards and scored the sole touchdown for his team. Rodney Hunt and Marcus Bankhead were the leading tacklers with 12.
Johnson C. Smith (0-0, 0-1) played Gardner-Webb on Thursday and were leveled 51-0 at home. The Golden Bulls were allowed only 25 net yards during the game. They look forward to their first conference match against Virginia State next Saturday.
