1999 Fall Coaches of the Year Announced

HAMPTON, VA -- The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association's Executive Committee convened today, by conference call, to select the 1999 CIAA Fall Coaches of the Year.

St. Augustine's College's men's cross country coach, George Williams was selected as the CIAA Men's Cross Country Coach of the Year. Williams led his team to the 1999 CIAA Cross Country Championship. His team later went on to compete in the Southeast Regional Championship and will compete in the NCAA Division II Cross Country Championship on November 20 at Missouri Southern State College in Joplin, MO.

Michael Lawson of N.C. Central University was named 1999 CIAA Women's Cross Country Coach of the Year. The Lady Eagles finished 2nd in the CIAA Women's Cross Country Championship with 66 points. Lawson is the coach of Katerina Glosova, a North Carolina Central University freshman, who qualified and ran for a third place individual performance at the 1999 NCAA Division II Southeast Women's Regional. She has qualifed for the national championship on November 20 at Missouri Southern State. A Czech Republic native, Glosova covered the 6K course in 21:58.76, becoming the first athlete from NCCU to qualify for the NCAA Championship in cross country.

Ingrid Wicker, of N.C. Central University, was unanimously chosen as the 1999 CIAA Volleyball Coach of the Year. The Eagles entered the CIAA volleyball championship as the second seed in the Western Division and went on win the championship. Wicker claimed her 100th victory this season finishing the year, 7-3 in the division, 13-3 in the CIAA, and 22-15 overall.

Winston-Salem State University's Coach Kermit Blount was selected as the CIAA Football Coach of the Year. Blount guided his team to a 7-0 Conference and 7-3 overall record this past season. Winston-Salem State is the 1999 CIAA Champion. This is the first time WSSU has claimed this honor since 1991. The Rams will represent the CIAA in the 1999 Pioneer Bowl on December 18, in Atlanta Georgia where they will take on the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) representative, Tuskegee University.

All coaches will be honored at the annual CIAA Spring Meeting.
