Virginia State Prevails as CIAA Baseball Champion

April 29, 2000

Petersburg, VA - Virginia State University (22-13) reigns as the CIAA baseball champion, defeating Shaw University (16-18), 2-1 in an extra inning thriller at Whaley M. Colbert Stadium on the VSU campus. The Trojans also won the CIAA Baseball Championship in 1998 on this very same field.

Tied 1-1 in the bottom of the eighth, VSU's Joel Rodriguez opened the inning with a single to left center and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Amos Stevenson walked to put runners on first and second with no outs.

Steven Mosley bunted safely, loading the bases. Todd Williams hit a soft grounder to the second baseman, scoring Mike Teasley for the winning run.

VSU's Roger Hicks pitched eight innings giving up only two hits and three walks for the game. He was named MVP of the Championship.

Shaw came out with big sticks and great defense, to rule game one, 11-2, which resulted in the additional game in the double elimination championship.
