Petersburg, VA - The CIAA Baseball Championship began today - hosted by Virginia State University.
Each of the six conference baseball teams are competing for the conference title in the double elimination championship. Today's action was held at both Whaley M. Colbert Stadium and the Petersburg Sports Complex.
Virginia State (20-12), CIAA regular season champion, and Shaw University (16-16), conference runners-up, both received byes in the initial round of play. The Elizabeth City State Vikings (13-20) edged out Bowie State, 4-3 in game one while defending champion, St. Augustine's (21-19), whipped St. Paul's (I25), 13-8.
Virginia State won game #4 on an error late in the 7" inning, defeating Elizabeth City State, 2-1.
In the loser's bracket, Bowie State knocked off Elizabeth City State, 6-2, and St. Augustine's canned St. Paul's, 12-0.
In tomorrow's action, Bowie State will face St. Augustine's at 10:00 am. Virginia State will take on Shaw at 1:00 pm.. The winner of the 10:00 am game and loser of the 1:00 contest will face off in the semifinal game at 4:00 pm. All games will take place at Whaley M. Colbert Stadium..
The championship game will be held on Saturday, May 29, 2000 at 12:00 noon.
The 2000 All-CIAA Baseball Team was announced last night during the championship team social. The team was selected by the CIAA Baseball Coach's Association.
Nathan Davis, St, Augustine's College, was named Player of the Year. Davis leads the conference in batting (.473), hits (53), home runs (It), runs (38), doubles (15) and RBI's (49), Shaw University's, Milton Redd, was voted Rookie of the Year. Redd is a conference leader in batting (Al 1), hits (39), and RBI's (1.32)
