Hampton VA - N.C- Central University was named the 1999-00 CIAA All-Sports Champion for women's sports while Virginia State University claimed the honor for men's sports. The awards were announced today at the CIAA Awards Luncheon held on Friday (May 19) at the Holiday Inn in Hampton, VA.
This year marks the third consecutive year that Virginia State University's men have captured the C.H. Williams award, indicative of excellence in Men's Championships. The Trojans scored a total of 175.5 points to out score N.C. Central University, which finished with 162.5 points. Johnson C. Smith University finished third with 145.5 points.
"To be named the C H. Williams award recipient for the third consecutive year demonstrates the commitment of our student athletes," said Virginia State University Athletic Director, Edward Cooper. "This award is an excellent way of recognizing the hard work and the dedication of our student athletes."
The N.C. Central University Lady Eagles captured the Loretta Taylor Award for the CIAA Women's All Sports Championship for the first time ever. The Lady Eagles scored 110.5 points to edge out St Augustine's College (108.5 points) who held the award for the past two years. Fayetteville State University came in third with 99 points.
Assistant Athletic Director, Ingrid Wicker exclaimed, "Yes!", as she received the news that the Lady Eagles had earned the all-sports award. She went on to say, "the N.C. Central family is proud of its women's sports programs, student-athletes and coaching staff. They have all worked diligently at bringing up their programs to a level of competitiveness. Each of our women's programs are to be commended for their loyalty to the program."
Each team is awarded points, by their finish in the CIAA conference sponsored championships in their respective sports. Points are awarded on a descending basis as determined by their finish in the championship event.
Anne Little of Winston-Salem State University was named Athletic Director of the Year and Kyle Serba, N.C. Central University was named Sports Information Director of the Year for the second consecutive year. George Williams, St. Augustine's College, was also awarded the Jeanette Lee Athletic Achievement Award by Commissioner Leon G, Kerry for outstanding athletic administration and achievement by a CIAA athletic program for the year.
