Saint Augustine's and Shaw capture Cross Country Titles
Al-Hassan and Glosuva repeat as individual champions

St. Augustine's Men |
Saint Augustine's College men's team achieved perfection and Shaw University's Lady Bears pulled off an upset in the CIAA Cross Country Championsips at Hagan Stone Park in Greensboro NC.

The Falcons swept the first seven places to achieve a perfect score of 15 points (only the first five finishers score) to outdistance Virginia State for the team title. St. Aug was led by individual champion Alhaji Al Hassan who successfully defended his 1999 title by completing the 8K course in 26:06. As a result of sweeping the first seven places, every member of the SAC team earns All-CIAA honors. Joining Al Hassan are David Thornton (27:59), Wesley Yeldell (28:03), Garrye Chavis (28:33), Victor McLaurin (28:45), Tim Cummings (28:50) and Damian Simmons (28:56). Al Hassan, Thornton, McLaurin, Chavis and Yeldell are repeat All-CIAA performers from last year.

Virginia State took second place with 61 points, followed by Shaw with 84 and Bowie State with 120 points.

Katerina Glosova |
In the women's race, Shaw University placed three runners in the top ten finishers to upset defending champion Saint Augustine's. Led by Shakima Chambers (21:21) and Lauraine Harris (21:27), the Lady Bears picked up their first-ever Cross Country Championship, improving on a second place finish last year.
N.C. Central's Katerina Glosova successfully defended her 1999 title running away from the field with a time of 19:29 over the 5K course. Virginia State's Shylan Scott finished second with a time of 20:36. Joining Glosova, Scott, Chambers and Harris on the All-CIAA team were Florencia Hunt of St. Augustine's and Virginia State's Joi Gary and Jennifer Walker. Glosova, Chambers and Hunt are repeat All-CIAA performers.
VSU finished second overall with 62 points followed by St. Augustine's with 78 and Elizabeth City State with 129 points.
