Virginia Union’s Andre Braxton Selected for Alonzo S. “Jake” Gaither Award

March 16, 2001

Hampton, VA…The 100% Wrong Club of Atlanta, Georgia selected Virginia Union University’s running back Andre Braxton as its 2000 Alonzo S. “Jake” Gaither Award winner.  The A.S. “Jake” Gaither Award ranks with the top sports awards in America, much like the Heisman Trophy, and is the top award presented by the 100% Wrong Club.  This award, which is one year older than the Heisman Award, recognizes the top football athlete from a historically black college or university.  There have only been two athletes from the CIAA to ever win this award and they have both been Panthers; Quarterback Carl Wright in 1991 and Running Back Andre Braxton in 2000.

The 100% Wrong Club was established in 1934 by thirteen sports enthusiasts in the City of Atlanta for the purpose of giving recognition to collegiate athletes in the 1930’s and 1940’s.  Today the club continues to maintain its historical link to the past, but it has expanded its scope and also recognizes local community leaders and national pioneers in the fields of sports and social justice

1983 & 1984    Jerry Rice- Mississippi Valley State/ San Francisco 49ers
