JCSU Golden Bulls to be honored at NBA game

April 10, 2001

CHARLOTTE, NC – Stephon Marbury and the NBA’s New Jersey Nets will be arriving to the “Queen’s City”, not only to suffer a possible defeat by the Charlotte Hornets, but also to take part in a very special day in Johnson C. Smith Univeristy's athletic history.

A couple of games away from completing the regular season, and possibly moving to a new arena, the Charlotte Hornets are taking time to focus their attention on a younger group of athletes who managed to wow the city during the 2000-2001 basketball season.

Thursday, April 12th, at 7:30PM, the Hornets will host a halftime ceremony to honor the CIAA and South Atlantic Region Champion Golden Bulls at the Charlotte Coliseum. South Atlantic Region Coach of the Year Steve Joyner was in his 13th season at the helm of the program as he guided the Bulls on a historical journey to the first NCAA Division II Elite Eight appearance in school history.

“We are pleased and honored to be recognized with Queen’s College for having an outstanding season,” said Joyner. “Recognition such as this will go a long way toward enhancing our student-athletes’ experience, and for that we are truly thankful.”

In light of the Golden Bulls success this season, the team has received tremendous support from the school and the city of Charlotte. Prior to their departure to Bakersfield, California for the Elite Eight Tournament, the City put on a pep rally for both JCSU and Queen’s College. Soon after their return the Golden Bulls were also awarded a proclamation from the city of Charlotte.
