RALEIGH, N.C. - The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Hip Hop Hoops Tour stops this week at in Raleigh on the campuses of St. Augustine's College, Shaw University and North Carolina State University. Partnering with Coca-Cola, Xerox, Carolina Ford Dealers, clothiers RP 55 and Azzure Denim, the Hip Hop Hoops Tour will bring the CIAA Basketball Tournament experience to college campuses.
The aim of the tour is creating excitement and awareness about the tournament at Raleigh's Entertainment and Sports Arena, Feb. 26 - March 3, while making the CIAA part of the life experience for students of the Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
"The students' enthusiasm and allegiances for their schools and alma maters is what breaths life into the CIAA," said Leon Kerry, commissioner of the CIAA. "With the Hip Hop Hoops Tour, it is our chance to bring the flavor and zeal of the tournament to the students. It gives them an opportunity to see what it is all about and to encourage them to come to Raleigh and support their schools during the tournament."
The tour will visit all 12 CIAA campuses and three non-CIAA campuses (University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, North Carolina State University and East Carolina University) with a basketball game, pre-game entertainment and music provided by various entertainers.
The pre-game show will include performances by a disc jockey, cheerleaders, pep bands and dance teams at each school. The high-energy basketball game will combine musical performances and comedy, while all games will be co-ed, Participants in the game will include local radio station DJs, students from each respective campus and halftime-performances by Fifth Gear Records recording artists. Raleigh-based rapper Dibiassi will perform the CIAA Hip Hop Hoops Tour theme song, while Durham-based rapper Omotade and hip-hop singing group The Katsckills Project of Charlotte will perform at each halftime.
In addition to the game, there will also be opportunities for students to register to vote, contests and opportunities for students to win tickets to this year's tournament in Raleigh's Entertainment and Sports Arena, February 26 - March 3, 2001.
"Whether you attended North Carolina Central, Shaw University or Livingstone College, the CIAA is a family," Kerry said. "It is all about the fans and this is just another way to celebrate that. By generating awareness and creating excitement on the campuses about the tournament, it increases the chances that the tournament's atmosphere will be as electric as it has ever been."
