The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association's Executive Committee caucused via conference call Monday to name the 2000 Fall Coaches of the Year.
Shaw University's William Montague is named the 2000 CIAA Women's Cross-Country Coach of the Year. Montague, in his first year as the head coach for Cross-Country, led the SU Lady Bears to the 2000 Cross-Country CIAA Crown with a score of 50.
The CIAA 2000 Men's Cross-Country Coach of the Year is awarded to George Willliams of Saint Augustine's College. With a perfect score of 15, the Falcons of SAC gained the CIAA Championship. Under Williams' leadership, the men advanced to and won the 2000 NCAA Division II Southeast Regionals. His runners qualified and competed in the NCAA National Championships, November 18 in Pomona, California.
Edric Poitier, of Saint Augustine's College earns 2000 Volleyball Coach of the Year accolades. Poitier earned his first CIAA Championship with a 15-10, 15-3, 15-6 defeat of North Carolina Central University on November 5, 2000. Poitier finished the season second in the Western Division, with a record of 8-1, 14-2 conference and 23-6 overall.
Winston-Salem State University's Coach Kermit Blount is the 2000 CIAA Football Coach of the Year. Blount, who becomes the third winningest coach in Winston-Salem State University history, is also the 2000 CIAA Football Champion with his 31-28 defeat of Virginia Union University on November 11, 2000 in Durham, North Carolina before 8,000 CIAA fans. As the Conference Champion, Blount, 5-1 in the conference and 8-2 overall, will lead his troops to battle the undefeated Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Champion Tuskegee University Golden Tigers in the 4th Annual Pioneer Bowl, December 16, 2000 at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta.
Coaches will be presented their awards at the Annual CIAA Coaches of the Year Luncheon held during the CIAA Spring Meeting, May 25 in Raleigh, North Carolina.
