2001 CIAA Commissioner's All-Academic Team announced

HAMPTON, VA -- Twenty student-athletes from the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association have been named to the fourth annual CIAA Commissioner's All-Academic Team, the CIAA announced Monday (May 14). “A balanced student-athlete is one who knows how to rotate their priorities,” said CIAA Commissioner Leon G. Kerry. “These chosen individuals have prioritized their goals and have excelled in the classroom as well as their respective playing fields. Certainly their values will carry over into life after college athletics and into the work force. I am proud to honor these individuals and hope to set a standard for student-athletes in the years to come.”

The 2001 CIAA Commissioner's All-Academic Team consists of 20 student-athletes, 10 on the First Team and 10 on the Second Team, as voted on by the CIAA Sports Information Directors’ Association. The average grade point average of the First Team is a 3.875, and the average for the Second Team is a 3.676 GPA (on a 4.0 scale).

The 2001 CIAA Commissioner's All-Academic First Team consists of Candice Ginsberg of Bowie State; Akin Ayorinde Minnis of Saint Augustine’s; Jenee Tucker of Virginia Union; Katerina Glosova, Lisa Hicks, Constance Murdock and Rachelle Zastoupil of N.C. Central; and Shakima Chambers, Kamala Jennings and LaTanya McDaniel of Shaw (see below).

The 2001 CIAA Commissioner's All-Academic Second Team includes Rayshawn Askew and Sharon Gorganni of Elizabeth City State; Gerald Gayles of Livingstone; Lanelle Turner of N.C. Central; Isis Paddyfote of Saint Paul’s; Kelly Howard and Randall Morgan of Shaw; and Jennifer Clark, Aaron Federspiel and Candice Idol of Winston-Salem State (see below). To be eligible, a student-athlete must have completed one full academic year at a CIAA institution, earned a minimum 3.20 overall grade point average, and played as a starter or important reserve in a CIAA sanctioned sport.
