Broncos Hand Falcons First Loss
Jonathan Autry threw three- fourth quarter touchdowns as
Fayetteville State (5-4, 3-3 CIAA) rallied to hand Saint
Augustine’s (8-1, 5-1 CIAA) its first loss of the season
45-28.
Trailing 21-17 after three quarters, Autry threw touchdowns
of 47, 31 and 10 yards and Geron Harper returned a fumble
39 yards for a touchdown as the Broncos outscored the Falcons
28-7 in the fourth quarter.
Quarterback Darrell Nesbitt, who passed for 292 yards, connected
with Eddie Montgomery on touchdown passes of 35 and 21 yards
as Saint Augustine’s, who came into the game as the
top ranked team in the Southeast Region, led 14-10 at the
half.
In the third quarter, Saint Augustine’s appeared to
take control of the game when Nesbitt broke loose for a 53-yard
touchdown run. Arthur Lemon added the PAT as the Falcons
opened up a 21-10 lead. The Broncos would close the gap some,
when Amir Holding capped a 15-play, 84 yard drive with a
1-yard touchdown run to cut Saint Augustine’s lead
to 21-17 going into the fourth quarter.
Autry, who was 19 of 30 for 301 yards and four touchdowns,
went to work in the fourth quarter, as he sandwiched touchdown
passes to Nick Green and Chris Holden around Harper’s
fumble return, as the Broncos roared back from a four-point
deficit and opened up a 38-21 lead on the stunned Falcons,
who came into the game sporting the second ranked defense
in Division II.
Saint Augustine’s would respond with an 11-play, 87-yard
drive that was capped by Kenneth Snowden’s eight-yard
touchdown run to trim the Broncos lead to 38-28 with 7:38
left in the game.
The Broncos would seal the upset on their next possession
when Autry threw his third touchdown of the quarter when
he connected with Veon McHam on a ten-yard score to push
FSU’s lead to 45-28.
Isaac Redman rushed for 186 yards and two touchdowns and
Glen Thomas added 130 receiving yards and two scores as Bowie
State (7-2, 5-2 CIAA) downed Virginia Union (2-7, 1-5 CIAA)
in Richmond.
Emmanuel Plummer’s fourth quarter safety proved to
be the game winner as Elizabeth City State (2-7, 1-5 CIAA)
edged Saint Paul’s (3-6, 2-4 CIAA) 8-6
Greg Pruitt Jr. rushed for 220 yards and three touchdowns
as North Carolina Central (8-1, 5-1 CIAA) stayed in contention
for post season play with a 48-14 win over Livingstone (1-8,
1-5 CIAA).
Michael Terry threw for 144 yards and three touchdowns as
Virginia State (6-3, 5-1 CIAA) took control of first place
in the Eastern Division with a 43-10 win over Shaw (5-4,
4-2 CIAA).
Jed Bines rushed for 155 yards and two touchdowns and Martin
Hicks added 93 yards and a score as Winston-Salem State (5-4,
5-1 CIAA) stayed in the hunt for the Western Division title
with a 28-9 win over Johnson C. Smith (0-9, 0-6 CIAA).

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
October 22, 2005
Steen was instrumental in the offensive line as he opened
up holes and provided pass protection in the Broncos’ 45-28
win over previously undefeated Saint Augustine’s.
The Broncos finished the game with 505 total offensive
yards (188 rushing, 317 passing).
Thomas caught four passes for 130 yards and scored two
touchdowns in the Bulldogs’ 42-12 victory over Virginia
Union in the 28th Annual Gold Bowl.
Autry guided the Broncos to an impressive 45-28 win over
the Falcons of Saint Augustine’s. He completed 19
of 30 passes for 301 yards and threw four touchdowns as
Fayetteville State defeated the number one team in the
Southeast Region.
Pettaway was all over the field as he collected a game-high
17 total tackles (12 solo, 5 assisted), including two tackles
for a loss of 5 yards, one sack for a loss of one yard,
one pass breakup, forced one fumble and recovered one fumble
in the Falcons’ 45-28 loss to Fayetteville State.
Lee had 6 total tackles (2 solo, 4 assisted) and two interceptions
in Saturday’s game on the road at Shaw University.
He caught one interception in the endzone and returned
the other interception for a 40-yard touchdown to give
the Trojans a 30-10 lead late in the 3rd quarter. He also
returned one kickoff for 13 yards.
Horton had 11 solo tackles and two pass breakups in the
Broncos’ 45-28 win over the previously undefeated
Falcons of Saint Augustine’s College.
Toliver returned a kickoff 78 yards for a touchdown and
rushed seven times for 51 yards in the Eagles’ win
over Livingstone College. He finished the game with 129
all-purpose yards.
Coach Phillips and the Broncos rallied in the fourth quarter
to give Saint Augustine’s its first loss of the season.
The Broncos set a new school record with 505 yards of total
offense.
