CIAA Football Week in Review
For the week ending October 15, 2005 (Week 8)
Eagles Rally to Hand Rams First Conference Loss
Adrian Warren’s 22-yard touchdown pass to Brad Hinton
with 1:38 left in the game proved to be the game winner as
North Carolina Central (7-1, 4-1 CIAA) rallied to down Winston-Salem
State 20-17 at Bowman-Gray Stadium.
Winston-Salem State (4-4, 4-1 CIAA) jumped out to a 14-0,
first quarter lead on a pair of touchdown runs by Martin
Hicks. North Carolina Central got on the scoreboard with
2:49 left in the first quarter when Greg Pruitt capped a
10-play, 75-yard drive with a two-yard touchdown run to cut
the Rams’ lead to 14-7. In the second quarter, Winston-Salem
State kicker Matt Hind nailed a 44-yard field goal to extend
the Rams’ lead to 17-7. The Eagles responded with a
46-yard field goal by Brandon Gilbert, to make the score
17-10 at the half.
NCCU opened the second half scoring when Gilbert capped the
Eagles’ opening drive of the third quarter with a 20-yard
field goal to cut WSSU’s lead to four at 17-13.
North Carolina Central made some key defensive adjustments
that changed the momentum of the game in the second half.
After racking up over 200 yards of total offense in the first
half, the Rams were stifled by the Eagles’ defensive
unit and limited to just 50 yards of total offense and held
scoreless over the last two quarters, setting up the Warren
to Hinton game winner in the fourth quarter.
Trailing by four, with less than four minutes left in the
game, Warren engineered an 8-play, 52-yard drive that was
capped by Hinton’s touchdown grab with the Eagles facing
third down and 20 yards to go.
Warren finished the game with 141 yards passing and one touchdown,
while the Eagles’ defense was led by defensive back
Andre George, who recorded 10 tackles and lineman Greg Peterson,
who had eight tackles and a sack. Winston-Salem State was
led by the backfield tandem of Hicks, who finished the game
with 107 yards rushing and Jed Bines who added 105 yards
on the ground.
In Bowie, Maryland, Olayi Adeboyeku scored on a pair of 1-yard
touchdown runs as Bowie State (6-2, 3-2 CIAA) handed Saint
Paul’s (3-5, 2-3 CIAA) a 21-7 loss.
In Fayetteville, receivers Veon McHam (8 receptions, 120
yards, 1 TD) and Charles Nieves
(6 receptions, 124 yards, 1 TD) combined to catch 14 passes
for 244 yards and two touchdowns as Fayetteville State downed
Johnson C. Smith 34-23.
Eddie Montgomery returned punts for touchdowns of 80 and
60 yards in the first half as undefeated Saint Augustine’s
(8-0, 5-0 CIAA) got by Livingstone (1-7, 1-4 CIAA) 20-14
in Salisbury.
Reggie Price rushed for 98 yards and three touchdowns as
Shaw (5-3, 4-1 CIAA) beat Elizabeth City State (1-7, 0-5
CIAA), setting up next week’s showdown with Eastern
Division co-leader, Virginia State.
Michael Terry threw for 172 yards and four touchdowns and
ran for another score as Virginia State (5-3, 4-1 CIAA) downed
archrival Virginia Union (2-6, 1-4 CIAA) 48-12 in Petersburg.
Up next for the Trojans, a match up with Shaw for sole possession
of first place in the Eastern Division.
