CIAA Football Week in Review
For the week ending October 8, 2005 (Week 7)
Eagles Stay in Title Hunt with Win over Broncos
North Carolina Central 17
Fayetteville State 12
Corey Brown rushed for a season high 127 yards and backup
quarterback Charles Futrell added 72 rushing yards as North
Carolina Central (6-1, 3-1 CIAA) used its ground game and
big plays from its special teams to grind out a 17-12 win
over visiting Fayetteville State (3-4, 1-3).
The Eagles took a 7-0 lead early in the first quarter when
Brandon Alston returned a FSU punt 63 yards for score. Fayetteville
State would respond on their next possession when quarterback
Jonathan Autry connected with Veon McHam on an 8-yard scoring
pass. Robert Munoz’s PAT was blocked allowing the Eagles
to go to the locker room with a 7-6 halftime lead.
With starting quarterback and CIAA passing leader Adrian
Warren hampered by a shoulder injury, Futrell, an option
quarterback, started the third quarter. On the Eagles’ first
possession of the half, Futrell combined with Brown as NCCU
used their ground game to eat up almost seven minutes of
the third quarter on a 15-play, 80-yard scoring drive that
was capped by a 4-yard end and around by receiver Brad Hinton
that gave the Eagles a 14-6 lead.
North Carolina Central would extend its lead to 17-6 early
in the fourth quarter when Brandon Gilbert connected on 32-yard
field goal. Fayetteville State would get on the scoreboard
again with 4:36 left in the game as Autry connected with
Charles Nieves on a 9-yard touchdown pass. The Broncos two-point
conversion was unsuccessful making the score 17-12. Fayetteville
State would get the ball back two more times in the ballgame,
but the NCCU defensive unit would thwart any hopes of a comeback.
