CIAA Football Week in Review
For the week ending September 24, 2005 (Week 5)
Eagles Down Bulldogs In Battle of Unbeatens
North Carolina Central 38, Bowie State 19
Starting at quarterback in the place of injured CIAA passing
leader Adrian Warren, Charles Futrell passed for 101 yards
and a score and rushed for 55 yards and a touchdown as North
Carolina Central improved to 5-0 with a 38-19 win over previously
unbeaten Bowie State. Futrell, who normally plays receiver,
proved to be a capable backup, as he guided the Eagles to
302 yards of total offense against one of Division II’s
stingiest defensive units.
A 54-yard punt return by Brandon Alston, a 3-yard run
by Greg Pruitt and a 42-yard Brandon Gilbert field goal
put the Eagles up 17-0 in the first quarter. Bowie State
would cut the lead to 17-7 when Lamar Manigo connected
with Glenn Thomas on a 34-yard touchdown pass. The Eagles
led 31-13 at the half following touchdown runs by Futrell
and Corey Brown in the second quarter and would outscore
the Bulldogs 7-6 in the second half for the game’s
final margin. Brown rushed for 107 yards and a touchdown
to lead NCCU’s ground attack, while Bowie State was
lead by Thomas, who caught eight passes for a game high
175 yards and three scores.
The Eagles’ win sets up another battle of undefeated
teams as the 5-0 Falcons of Saint Augustine’s visit
Durham on Saturday for the Eagle’s Homecoming.
Shaw 49, Livingstone 27
Jermonty Kimbrough passed for 191 yards and three scores,
including two to Daniel Jackson. Dion McIver rushed
for 167 yards and a touchdown as Shaw bounced back from
last week’s loss with a 49-27 home win over Livingstone.
Saint Paul’s 27, Johnson C.
Smith 7
Mario Woods’ touchdown off of a fumble recovery and
Greg Toler’s touchdown return of a blocked kick highlighted
Saint Paul’s 27-7 road win over Johnson C. Smith.
Virginia State 22, Fayetteville State 14
Musa Conteh kicked field goals of 45, 29 and 47 yards and
Josh Russell and Keith Johnson each scored fourth quarter
touchdowns, as Virginia State rallied from a 14-0 first
quarter deficit to down Fayetteville State 22-14 in Fayetteville.
Winston-Salem State 31, Virginia Union 0
In Richmond, Martin Hicks rushed for 203 yards and three
touchdowns on 22 carries as Winston-Salem State blanked
Virginia Union 31-0.
Saint Augustine’s 7, Elizabeth
City State 0
Darrell Nesbit’s 68-yard touchdown pass to Eddie
Montgomery in the first quarter provided all the scoring
Saint Augustine’s would need as the Falcon’s
defense limited Elizabeth City State to 127 yards of total
offense in the 7-0 shutout.
