Bulldogs Thump I-AA Rivals


Bowie State 35 Morgan State 21
Isaac Redman rushed for a school record 209 yards and three touchdowns as the Bowie State Bulldogs rolled to a 35-21 win over the I-AA Morgan State Bears. Redman scored on touchdown runs of 9, 25, and 99 yards as Bowie State jumped out to a 28-0 lead over their in-state rivals from the MEAC. The Bears finally got on the scoreboard with 36 seconds remaining in the second quarter when a 6-yard scoring run by quarterback Byron Selby and a successful two-point conversion cut Bowie State’s lead to 28-8. On Bowie’s next possession, a 56-yard run by Nathaniel Queen and a face masking penalty against MSU gave the Bulldogs first and goal at the Morgan State six-yard line. Queen would cap the drive two plays later with a 5-yard scoring run to extend the Bulldogs’ lead to 35-8. Morgan State would respond with a 23-second, 66-yard scoring drive capped by a 5-yard run by Selby to cut the margin to 35-14 at the half. The offensive fireworks of the first two quarters gave way to a defensive battle in the second half as Bowie State held the Bears to one 4th quarter touchdown for the game’s final margin. With the win, Bowie State improves to 3-0, 1-0 and will host Livingstone next Saturday.

Fayetteville State 39 Elizabeth City State 6
Quarterback Jonathan Autry threw four touchdown passes to Veon McHam as Fayetteville State rolled to 39-6 win over Elizabeth City State. Autry finished with 244 yards passing. McHam caught five passes for 172 yards as the Broncos improved to 2-1.

North Carolina Central 28 Lenoir-Rhyne 21
Greg Pruitt Jr. scored on a 9-yard run in overtime as the North Carolina Central Eagles improved to 3-0 with a 28-21 win over the Lenoir-Rhyne Bears. It was the second rushing touchdown of the day for Pruitt, whose 15-yard touchdown run gave the Eagles a 21-7 lead at the half. Pruitt led the Eagles with 50 yards rushing, while Adrian Warren’s 195 yards passing and Torey Ross’ 128 receiving yards led NCCU’s aerial attack.

Saint Augustine’s 13 Mars Hill 6
Quarterback Darrell Nesbit threw for a touchdown and rushed for another score as Saint Augustine’s rallied from a 6-0 halftime deficit to upend Mars Hill 13-6. Nesbitt connected with Andre McGlone on an 18-yard scoring strike in the third quarter and rushed for a 6-yard score in the fourth as the 3-0 Falcons won a defensive battle.

Offensive Lineman
Jamal Berry – Bowie State, OL, 6’2”, 279, SR, New Carrollton, MD

In the 3rd Annual Prince Mason Classic, Berry prevented the Bears from penetrating the offensive line as the Bulldogs rushed for 394 yards and 4 touchdowns and passed for 85 yards and one touchdown in the 35-21 win over Morgan State.

Receiver
Veon McHam – Fayetteville State, WR, 6’1”, 178, SR, Winston-Salem, NC

McHam was too much for the Vikings’ secondary to handle with 5 receptions for 172 yards and 4 touchdowns to lead the Broncos to a 39-7 win. He tied the school record for touchdown receptions in a single game set in 1974 by James Godwin.

Offensive Back
Issac Redman – Bowie State, RB, 6’0”, 220, SO, Paulsboro, NJ

Against Division I-AA Morgan State, Redman had an amazing day on the gridiron rushing for 209 yards (career high and school record) on 32 carries and 3 touchdowns to lead the Bulldogs to their 3rd win of the season. His longest run of the game was a 99-yard touchdown that gave Bowie State a 28-0 lead late in the 2nd quarter.

Defensive Lineman
Emmanuel Plummer – Elizabeth City State, LB, 6’1”, 235, JR, Freeport, NY

In the 39-6 losts to Fayetteville State, Plummer amassed a game-high 13 tackles (12 solo, 1 assisted), including 2 tackles for a loss of 10 yards, one forced fumble and had one sack for a loss of 9 yards.

Defensive Back
Ronald Dowdy - North Carolina Central, DE, 6’4”, 285, SR, Fayetteville, NC

With the game tied at 21-21 in overtime, Dowdy sacked the Bears’ quarterback and forced a fumble that lead to the Eagles’ 28-21 win over Lenoir-Rhyne. He finished the game with 6 tackles (5 solo, 1 assisted), including 4 tackles for a loss of 17 yards, 2 sacks for a loss of 15 yards, 2 forced fumbles and had one fumble recovery.

Rookie
Myron Miller – Saint Augustine’s, CB, 5’9”, 175, FR, Statesville, NC

On the road at Mars Hill, North Carolina, Miller intercepted 2 passes, including a key interception on the 5-yard line with two minutes remaining in the game to preserve the Falcons’ 13-6 victory against the Lions of Mars Hill College.

Speciality
Fritz Charles – Saint Augustine’s, CB, 5’11”, 190, SO, Miami, FL

With Saint Augustine’s leading 7-6, Charles blocked a field goal in the fourth quarter to prevent Mars Hill from taking the lead over the Falcons. The blocked field goal eventually led to a Nesbitt touchdown that extended the Falcons’ lead to 13-6.

Coach
Mike Lynn – Bowie State

Coach Lynn and the Bulldogs’ avenged last year’s losts to Morgan State in the 3rd Annual Prince Mason Classic with an impressive 35-21 victory over the Division I-AA opponent this year. The win puts Bowie State at the top in the Eastern Division.
