For the week ending September 3, 2005 (Week 2)
Falcons Blank Defending Champions
Saint Augustine’s 33 Shaw 0
Quarterback Darrell Nesbit threw touchdown
passes of 64 and 90 yards to Eddie Montgomery, as Saint Augustine’s
used a 22-point third quarter to ice a dominating 33-0 win over cross-town
rival and defending CIAA champion Shaw University. After a scoreless first
quarter, the Falcons scored on a safety, a 73-yard touchdown run by Travoris
Carter and an Arthur Lemon field goal in the 2nd quarter to open up an 11-0
halftime lead. After forcing Shaw into a three and out on their first possession
of the third quarter, the Falcons scored on four of their five third quarter
possessions to blow the game open. For the game, Nesbitt was 6 of 14 for
203 passing yards and three touchdowns, while Montgomery caught three passes
for 156 yards and two scores. Shaw, who was held scoreless for the first
time in 23 games, was limited to 141 of yards of total offense and committed
four turnovers as they lost to the Falcons for the second year in a row.
Virginia State 34 Norfolk State 6
Virginia State’s defense forced
four turnovers and limited Norfolk State to 235 yards of total offense
and two field goals as the Trojans crushed the Division I-AA Spartans 34-6
in Norfolk. After opening up a 10-3 first quarter lead on a blocked punt
return by Pierre Lee and a 38-field goal by Muse Conteh, the Trojans used
a 17-point second quarter to open up a 27-6 lead at the half as they cruised
to their third straight win over the Spartans of the MEAC.
Bowie State 12 Johnson C. Smith 9
Nathaniel Queen rushed for 102 yards
and Ronald Walls nailed a 27-yard field goal with two seconds remaining
to break a 9-9 tie as Bowie State rallied to defeat Johnson C. Smith 12-9
in Bowie.

Offensive Lineman

Receiver
Eddie Montogmery – Saint Augustine’s College, WR, 5’11”,
175, SR, Gaffney, SC
Montgomery ripped the Shaw Bears’ secondary apart
in the third quarter with 2 receptions for 154 yards and 2 touchdowns in
the cross-town rivalry victory. His longest catch of the game came with
11 seconds remaining in the third quarter, when he caught a 90-yard touchdown
pass from QB Darrell Nesbit as the Falcons went up 33-0 to end the fourth
quarter. He finished the game with 3 catches for 156 yards.
Offensive Back
Darrell Nesbit – Saint Augustine’s College, QB, 6’4”,
SR, Walterboro, SC
With bragging rights on the line, Nesbitt guided the
Falcons to a stunning victory over cross-town rival Shaw University. He
connected on 6-of-14 passes for 203 yards and 3 touchdowns and carried
the ball 11 times for 54 yards as Saint Augustine’s remains undefeated.
Defensive Lineman
Tyrone Pettaway – Saint Augustine’s College, LB, 6’3”,
220, SR, Newport News, VA
Pettaway anchored the Falcons’ defensive
charge with a team-high 11 total tackles (3 solo, 8 assisted), including
2 tackles for a loss of 5 yards as Saint Augustine’s held the Bears
to only 141 yards of total offense.
Defensive Back
Anthony Hicks - Fayetteville State, DB, 5’9”, 177, SR, Wilmington,
NC
Leading the Broncos’ defense this week against Presbyterian College,
Hicks collected 12 total tackles (8 solo 4 assisted), including a half
tackle for a loss of 1 yard, one pass breakup and 2 quarterback hurries
in the 35-6 loss to the Blue Hose.
Rookie
Darron Ellis – Bowie State, WR, 5’11”, 190, FR, Clinton,
MD
Ellis was instrumental in getting the Bulldogs’ first score on
the board with a 24–yard touchdown reception entering the fourth
quarter as Bowie State came from behind to knockoff Johnson C. Smith 12-9.
Speciality
Ronald Walls – Bowie State, PK, 5’9”, 160, FR, Capital
Heights, MD
With the game tied 9-9 and only 2 seconds remaining in the contest, Walls nailed
a 27-yard field goal to lift Bowie State to a 12-9 victory over the Golden
Bulls of Johnson C. Smith.
Coach
Michael Costa – Saint Augustine’s College
Coach Costa and the
Falcons shutdown the Defending CIAA Champion Shaw University 33-0 and held
their offense to 34 rushing yards and 107 passing yards as Saint Augustine’s
moves to 2-0 on the season.
