For the week ending August 27, 2005 (Week 1)
Elizabeth City State Vikings
Win a Déjà vu
Opening in the Swamp;
Elizabeth City State 51 Livingstone 6
Chris Carter caught four passes for 149 yards and a touchdown
as the ECSU Vikings opened the season with an impressive 51-6
win over the Livingstone Blue Bears. This is the Vikings’ first
season opening win since 1995, which was also against the Blue
Bears.
North Carolina Central 70 Edward Waters 12
Quarterback Adrian Warren passed for 337 yards and seven touchdowns
as the Eagles opened the 2005 season with a 70-12 win over
NAIA Edward Waters. Warren, last season’s CIAA Offensive
Player of the Year, completed 14-of-21 passes as he established
an NCCU single game record for touchdown passes. Wideouts Julius
McClellan and Torey Ross each hauled in three touchdowns each
as the Eagles rolled up 589 yards of total offense.
Fayetteville State 53 Virginia Union 26
Dentyl Jackson caught three passes for 110 yards, including a
75-yard touchdown, as the Fayetteville State Broncos whipped
the Virginia Union Panthers in Fayetteville. Herb Jones caught
eight balls for 146 yards and two scores to lead the Panthers.
Bowie State 40 West Virginia State 7
Isaac Redman rushed for 135 yards and three touchdowns as the
Bowie State Bulldogs opened the 2005 football season with a convincing
40-7 win over the West Virginia State Yellow Jackets.
Saint Augustine’s 24 Lane 6
Eddie Montgomery caught first quarter touchdowns of 54 and 27
yards as the Falcons jumped out to an early lead on their way
to a 24-6 win over the home standing Lane Dragons.
Carson-Newman 45 Shaw 24
Jermonty Kimbrough passed for 433 yards and two touchdowns and
rushed for a touchdown as the 25th ranked Bears came up short
in their highly anticipated match up with the 10th ranked Eagles
of Carson-Newman.
Catawba 20 Winston-Salem State 10
Jed Bines rushed for 80 yards and a touchdown as Winston-Salem
State opened the 2005 campaign with a 20-10 loss to the visiting
Catawba Indians.
Glenville State 33 Johnson C. Smith 9
Glenville State’s Joey Conrad threw four touchdowns as
the visiting Pioneers downed the Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith.
Smith’s scoring came on a 25-yard field goal by Herbert
Collins and a ten-yard run by Andre Williams.
Shepherd 24 Virginia State 6
P.J. Berry had 13 receptions and 195 all-purpose yards in the
Trojans’ road loss to the Shepherd University Rams.

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
August 28, 2005
Offensive Lineman
Robert Duncan – North Carolina Central, C, 6’0”,
255, JR, Winston-Salem, NC
In the season opener against Edward Waters, Duncan provided
protection as the Eagles’ offense racked up 397 yards
in the air and rushed for 197 yards on the ground. The
Eagles finished the game with an amassing 589 yards of
total offense. (6th best in the school history)
Receiver
Julius McClellan - North Carolina Central, WR, 6’4”,
225, JR, Lakeland, FL
In Saturday’s action on the gridiron, McClellan caught
three passes for 126 yards (averaged 42 yards per catch) and
three touchdowns. He hauled in TD catches for 60, 8, and 58 yards
to lead the Eagles’ offense.
Offensive Back
Adrian Warren – North Carolina Central, QB, 6’5”,
215, SR Raleigh
Warren set a new school record with 7 touchdown passes
and established a new individual career record with 337
passing yards in the Eagles’ win over Edward Waters.
He finished the game completing 14-of-21 passes and no
interception.
Defensive Lineman
Emmanuel Plummer – Elizabeth City State, LB, 6’0”,
235, JR, Freeport, NY
In front of the home crowd, Plummer led the Vikings’ defense
with 10 total tackles (7 solo, 3 assisted) including 5
for a loss of 5 yards and had one sack for a loss of 5
yards as Elizabeth City State shutdown the Blue Bears of
Livingstone 51-6.
Defensive Back
DeLaurence Harper – Fayetteville State, SS, 5’9”,
188, SR, Wilmington, NC
Harper was all over the field in Saturday’s game against
Virginia Union. He terrorized the Panthers’ offense
by intercepting 2 passes and returned them for 21 yards
and collected 12 total tackles (10 solo 2 assisted) as
the Broncos defeated Virginia Union 53-26.

Speciality
Kevin Dodson – Elizabeth City State, P/K, 6’1”,
195, JR, Camden, NC
Dodson kept the Blue Bears pinned in their own territory
for most of the game by kicking 4-of-5 punts inside the
20-yard line as the Vikings’ win their home opener.
He finished the game with 5 punts for 214 yards and connected
on 7-of -7 Extra Point Attempts.
Coach
Waverly Tillar – Elizabeth City State
Coach Tillar guided the Vikings to their first opening day
win in ten years with a 51-6 victory over Livingstone College.
Their last opening day win came back in 1995 when the Vikings
defeated the Blue Bears 16-6.
