Bulldogs Clinch Eastern Division with Win over Trojans

Bowie State 27, Virginia State 17
Quarterback Lamar Manigo rushed for a touchdown and passed for another score as Bowie State (8-2, 5-2 CIAA) downed Virginia State (6-4, 5-2 CIAA) 27-17 in Petersburg to claim the Eastern Division title and a spot in next week’s CIAA Championship game.

Manigo put Bowie State on the scoreboard early when he broke loose for a 41-yard touchdown on the Bulldogs’ second offensive play of the game. Ronald Walls added the PAT, giving BSU a 7-0 lead with 13:29 left in the first quarter. Virginia State’s Muse Conteh kicked a 49-yard field goal to cut the Bulldogs lead to 7-3 after one quarter.

Bowie State broke the game open in the second quarter. In a span of less than six minutes, Manigo connected with Glenn Thomas on a 92-yard touchdown pass, tailback Isaac Redman scored on a five-yard run and Terrence Stafford returned an interception 56 yards for a score as the Bulldogs scored 20 unanswered points to open up a 27-3 lead at the half.

Virginia State got a second half spark from reserve quarterback Thomas Boyd who scored on a 21-yard run in the third quarter to cut the lead to 27-10. Boyd then hooked up with P.J. Berry on a 62-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter to get within ten at 27-17. After forcing Bowie State to punt on their next possession, the Trojans got the ball at their own 27-yard line and put together a 13-play drive that got them down to the BSU 6-yard line. A sack of Boyd by Bowie State’s Sterling Green forced the Trojans to try a 27-yard Muse Conteh field goal that sailed wide and gave the Bulldogs the ball back, allowing them to use their ground game to eat up the remaining 5:17 of the game. Manigo finished with 122 yards passing while Redman picked up 124 rushing yards on a school record 33 carries to lead the Bulldogs.

Fayetteville State 52, Livingstone 22
Jonathan Autry threw for 279 yards and five touchdowns and Elliot London added 103 receiving yards and 96 yards rushing as Fayetteville State (6-4, 4-3 CIAA) closed out the regular season with a 52-22 win over Livingstone (1-9, 1-6 CIAA).

North Carolina Central 34, Johnson C. Smith 14
Adrian Warren rushed for a touchdown and threw for another score as North Carolina Central improved to 9-1, 6-1 CIAA with a 34-14 win over Johnson C. Smith (0-10, 0-7 CIAA). Warren connected with Toryeon Hester on an 8-yard touchdown pass and rushed for a 1-yard touchdown as the Eagles jumped out to a 14-0 lead on the Golden Bulls and never looked back.

Saint Paul’s 21, Shaw 14
Larry Graham’s 61-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter proved to be the game winner as Saint Paul’s (4-6, 3-4 CIAA) closed out it’s season with a win over last year’s CIAA Champions Shaw University (5-5, 4-3 CIAA).

Virginia Union 14, Elizabeth City State 6
John Grier threw for 160 yards and two touchdowns as Virginia Union (3-7, 2-5 CIAA)closed out their season with a 14-6 win over Elizabeth City State (2-8, 1-6 CIAA).

Winston-Salem State 35, Saint Augustine’s 33
Jed Bines rushed for 105 yards and two touchdowns as Winston-Salem State (6-4, 6-1 CIAA) jumped out to a two touchdown lead and then held off Saint Augustine’s (8-2, 5-2 CIAA) for a 35-33 win.

Offensive Lineman
Kyle Lown – Fayetteville State, C, 6’3”, 331, SR, Tucson, AZ

Lawn provided protection as the Broncos’ quarterback threw 5 touchdown passes to set a new school record in Saturday’s action against Livingstone College. The Broncos’ ground attack rushed for 259 yards and two touchdowns in the season finale to finish with 538 total offensive yards.

Receiver
Andre McGlone – Saint Augustine’s , WR, 6’3”, 200, JR, Hampton, VA

McGlone ended the season on a good note, recording a season-high 7 catches for 135 yards and two touchdowns as the Falcons fell to Winston-Salem State 35-33.

Offensive Back
Jonathan Autry – Fayetteville State, QB, 6’0”, 209, SO, Spring Lake, NC

In the Broncos 52-22 route of Livingstone College, Autry completed 15-22-0 receptions for 279 yards and five touchdowns to set a new single season record for touchdowns thrown by a Broncos Quarterback. He finished the year with 21 touchdowns, breaking the old record of 18 set in 2003 by Duane Taylor.

Defensive Lineman
Andy Julien – Virginia Union, LB, 6’0”, 230, JR, New Rochelle, NY

Julien recorded a team and season-high 15 tackles (8 solo, 7 assisted) in the Panthers’ 14-6 win over Elizabeth City State. He also forced a fumble and had one tackle for a loss of one yard in the game.

Defensive Back
Greg Toler – Saint Paul’s , DB, 6’1”, 187,F R, Washington, DC

Toler led the Tigers’ defensive attack against Shaw University with 5 tackles (4 solo, 1 assisted), including one tackle for a loss of 2 yards, recovered one fumble and broke up three passes to help seal a 21-14 victory over the Bears.

Rookie
Walter Virgil – Saint Paul’s, QB, 6’0”, 180, FR, Somerset, NJ

Virgil was instrumental in guiding the Tigers’ offense to a season ending win over Shaw University. He completed 7 out of 14 passes for 162 yards and one touchdown and ran the ball 6 times for 6 yards. His longest reception was a 70-yard touchdown pass to receiver Lonnie Sanders.

Specialty
Brandon Gilbert - North Carolina Central, PLK, 5’10”, 175, SO, Graham, NC

Gilbert kicked two field goals (32, 23) and converted on all four extra-point kicks to account for 10 points in the Eagles 34-14 win over Johnson C. Smith.

Coach
Mike Lynn – Bowie State

In only his 2nd season, Coach Lynn guided the Bulldogs to an Eastern Division Title by knocking off Virginia State 27-17 in Saturday’s conference action.


News Notes
Lamar Manigo, Bowie State – Became the Bulldogs all-time season leader in touchdowns with 13 for the year. The record was 12 touchdowns previously held in 1999 by Jimmy Whitehead.

Issac Redman, Bowie State – Became the Bulldogs all-time rushing yards leader with 1193 total yards, surpassing the old record of 1073 yards held by Milton Carr-1975.

Coach Willard Bailey, Saint Paul's – Captured his 215th career win with a victory over Shaw, extending his streak as the winningest active coach in Black College Football.
