Fayetteville State Wins CIAA Women’s Tennis Title Over ShawApril 23, 2005 Richmond, VA - It would come down to a tie-breaker on Saturday as the Fayetteville State University Lady Broncos won yet another CIAA women’s tennis title over the Lady Bears of Shaw University. The Lady Rams of Winston-Salem State University would close out competition with a sixth-place finish.
The Lady Broncos and Lady Bears would each finish the championships with 66 total points, forcing a tie breaker to be used to determine the eventual champion. CIAA rules mandated that the draw be broken by using a head-to-head tie-breaker format. That format would crown the Lady Broncos the 2005 CIAA Champion as Fayetteville State University would post a 53% winning percentage over Shaw in head to head matches. The championship would ultimately come down to a sixth singles, semi-final matchup between the two teams. Deadlocked at even in head to head matches, the Lady Broncos would earn the championship with Dana Maynor’s 6-1, 6-0 win over Shaw’s Ronke Oyelade that came in the sixth-singles semi-final round. Johnson C. Smith University would finish in third place with 50 points, with Virginia State posting 47 points, Virginia Union posting 30 points and the Lady Rams of Winston-Salem State University posting 27 points, good enough for a sixth-place finish.
