St. Augustine's Men, Women retain CIAA Track & Field Titles

            PETERSBURG, VA – Saint Augustine’s College defended its men’s and women’s conference championship titles by cruising to team victories at the 2005 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Rogers Stadium on the campus of Virginia State University in Petersburg, Virginia, on Saturday (April 23).

St. Augustine’s women won their ninth consecutive CIAA outdoor track & field crown by amassing 238.5 points, the most scored by any Lady Falcons squad during the championship run. Bowie State University, which placed sixth a year ago, enjoyed its best finish in more than 15 years by placing second with 111 points, while North Carolina Central University captured third place with 77 points.

Doris Thompson of St. Augustine’s repeated as the Most Outstanding Female Field Athlete by winning the shot put (13.34 meters) and discus throw (40.94m) for the second straight year, and placing second in the javelin throw (30.76m). Fellow Lady Falcon Johnsie Liles was awarded Most Outstanding Female Track Athlete honors after winning the 200-meter dash (24.81) and 400m dash (54.75), while also running a leg of the second place 4x400m relay squad.

NCCU’s Yolanda Barber was just one point shy of Liles after winning the 800m (2:21.71) and 1500m (5:01.00) runs, but finishing in third place as a member of the 4x400m relay.

St. Augustine’s men made it eight straight titles during the outdoor season by tallying 213 points. Host Virginia State University placed second with 108 points, while NCCU finished third with 91 points.

Patrick Wright of Livingstone College earned his third consecutive award as Most Outstanding Male Field Athlete after winning the shot put (14.47m) and discus throw (42.86) for the third straight year, while also placing fourth in the javelin throw (43.88m).

Andre Faulcon of Virginia State was voted Most Outstanding Male Track Athlete after winning the 100m (11.06) and 200m (21.73) dashes, while also placing second in the long jump (7.07m) and seventh in the javelin throw (37.60m).

            Adrian Findlay of St. Augustine’s finished his standout CIAA run by winning his fourth straight conference title in the men’s 400m hurdles with a time of 50.95.
