PETERSBURG, VA – After one day of competition at the 2005 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Outdoor Track & Field Championships on the campus of Virginia State University in Petersburg, Virginia, perennial power Saint Augustine’s College sits atop both the men’s and women’s team standings.

St. Augustine’s women, winners of the last eight CIAA outdoor track & field championships, enjoy a decisive 22-point advantage (41 to 19) over second place Shaw University after three scored events. The Lady Falcons swept the top three positions in the shot put with Doris Thompson winning her second straight conference title with a throw of 13.34 meters, followed by all-CIAA performances by Daysy Cardoba (11.73m) and Ana Lorenzo (11.25m). SAC’s Kimberly Moore earned all-conference honors by placing third in the long jump (5.54m).

Bowie State University’s Damara Parrish won the women’s long jump with a leap of 5.58m, while North Carolina Central University’s Aisha Brown claimed the conference title in the 1500m run with a winning time of 11:28.66.

St. Augustine’s men, who have captured the past seven league titles during the outdoor season, hold a slim four-point edge (54 to 50) over host Virginia State after six scored events. Fabian Hutchinson won his third consecutive conference title in the long jump for the Falcons with a distance of 7.50m, while teammate Jarvis Adams took first place in the high jump with a leap of 2.03m.

Virginia State was powered by a one-two finish in the men’s pole vault with Shannon Boling winning the conference title with a height of 3.59m, followed by Kelly Bates in second place with a 3.43m.

Livingstone’s men had some impressive performances in day one competition for a third place spot with 43 points. LC freshman Darius Shade knocked off two-time defending champion Larry Marshall of SAC in the 1500m run, as Shade became the first runner to be clocked under four minutes at the CIAA Championships in nine years. Shade’s winning time of 3:59.82 is the best since Joseph King of St. Augustine’s ran a 3:51.40 in 1996. Livingstone field event specialist Patrick Wright won his third consecutive conference crown in the shot put with a throw of 14.47m.

Day two of the 2005 CIAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships will get underway on Saturday (April 23) starting at 11 a.m. at Rogers Stadium on the campus of Virginia State University.
