Bears Advance; Falcons and Trojans Rain Delayed

State Rescheduled for 9:00am Friday

PETERSBURG, VA- On Thursday, the Elizabeth City State University Vikings and the Shaw University Bears were able to advance in the winners bracket in the 2005 CIAA Baseball Tournament. However due to inclement weather no team was ousted from the double elimination tournament.The skies opened up during warm-ups for Thursday’s final game between Virginia State and Saint Augustine’s. Subsequently, it will take place at 9:00am Friday morning.
In game one, #2 Elizabeth City State Vikings rallied back from what was once a nine-run deficit to edge the #3Virginia State Trojans 13-12 at Whaley Colbert Field in Petersburg.
The Vikings cut into the lead scoring four runs in the 5th inning beginning with a two-run homer by senior outfielder Victor Branch. The Trojans would get a run back in the top of the 6th, however the Vikings quickly responded, scoring seven runs on four hits and two Trojan errors to take a 13-11 lead. VSU would add a run in the 7th but were held scoreless for over the final two innings.
In the day’s second game #4 Shaw University held off cross-town rival Saint Augustine’s College 7-4. Sophomore Kevin White pitched a complete game to lead his team in the upset of the #1 seeded Falcons. In what was a tightly contested match with the Bears clinging to a one run lead (3-2), Shaw used a four-run inning in the top of the top of the 8th to pull out the win. The Bears (15-17) now move on to face Elizabeth City State (17-20) at 11:00 with the winner advancing to the championship round on Saturday. All games will take place at Whaley Colbert Field on the campus of Virginia State University.
