2005 CIAA Tournament sets new Standard
for General Scholarship Fund Contributions
Host City Contributions, Tickets Sales, Sponsor Revenue
Generates Record $1,000,000 for the General Scholarship Fund
April 26, 2005
HAMPTON , Va. — The 2005 Central Intercollegiate Athletic
Association’s annual basketball tournament generated a record $1,000,000
for the conferences’ general scholarship fund, which provides financial
assistance to any student attending one of the CIAA member institutions with
a need. The tournament, which wrapped up its final year in Raleigh at the RBC
Center March 5 before moving to Charlotte for the next three years, has increased
its general scholarship fund contributions 48 percent since the tournament moved
to Raleigh.
The $1 million dollars represents a 12 percent increase from 2004 and reflects
the $340,000 commitment raised by the City of Raleigh, as well as ticket sales
and sponsorship revenue generated by the CIAA tournament and conference offices,
respectively.

“The CIAA Board of Directors stated six years ago that its goal was to
grow the tournament in order to provide each member institution $100,000 annually
and we are fast approaching our goal,” said CIAA Commissioner Leon G. Kerry,
referring to the general scholarship funds created by tournament revenues. “In
winning the bid for the 2006-2008 tournaments, Charlotte committed $1 million
dollars annually in scholarships, and combined with continued growth and momentum,
we expect to exceed our goal in the coming years.”
