2005 CIAA Hall of Fame Inductees Selected

Hampton, VA. . . The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association is proud to announce this year’s inductees to the John B. McLendon Hall of Fame. The induction ceremony for the 2005 class will be held Friday, March 4 at 11:00 am at the Raleigh Marriott Crabtree Valley. 

 

Ernie Warlick

Ernie Warlick was an All-CIAA and All-American football player for North Carolina Central University. He played the tight end position for the Buffalo Bills from 1962-1965 and was a member of the 1964 and 1965 American Football League championship teams.

 

Warlick has received several honors including being named on the Buffalo Bill All-Time Silver Anniversary Team (1984), Buffalo Broadcast Hall of Fame (1998), Ralph C. Wilson Jr., the Buffalo Bills Owner, Distinguished Service Award (2000), the Buffalo Urban League Citizenship Award and the YMCA Community Service Award.

William “Pony” Wilson

William “Pony” Wilson, as a Virginia Unionite, was the 1952 CIAA Basketball Most Valuable Player and went on to play for the Harlem Globetrotters from 1952-1954.

 

After which, he began his coaching career at Atkins High School of Winston-Salem, NC, West Kinney Junior High School of Newark, NJ and Central High School where he led them to many victories and championships.

 


Phyllis Laverne Sweat

Phyllis Laverne Sweat, a native of Norfolk, VA, was the first female President of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association in the late 1980’s.

 

Sweat’s ultimate accomplishment in track field came in 1999 when she was selected to be an assistant coach for the United States Track and Field Team at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia.

 

While coaching at Hampton University and Norfolk State University respectively, she earned the CIAA Track and Field Coach of the Year nine times, was the NAIA National Coach of the Year in 1981, was voted NCAA Division II Coach of the Decade in 1991, was selected as Head Coach of the World University Games, Bucharest, Romania 1991, and Head Coach of the Junior Pan American Game, Winnipeg, Canada in 1993.

 

 

Charles Oakley

Charles Oakley, a native of Cleveland, Ohio, played four years for Virginia Union University. His senior year, 1985, he led the team to a CIAA Championship and was named Co-MVP of the tournament and Co-Player of the year. In the CIAA he was named all-conference for all four years, has a career total of points 2,379 (1981-85), and ranks 11th in the CIAA for scoring. In 1985 he was the NCAA rebounding leader averaging 17.3 rebounds in 31 games for a total of 535.

 

The Cleveland Cavaliers drafted him in 1985 and since retiring this year he has been on the NBA rosters of the Chicago Bulls, New York Knicks, Toronto Raptors, Washington Wizards, and Houston Rockets.

 

 

Bruce Rader

Rader is the Sports Director for the WAVY-TV, Portsmouth, Virginia. He has spent 27 years in television sports broadcasting and has served the community through the Bruce Rader Charities Foundation. Through his foundation, he has given hundreds and thousands of dollars to charities in the Hampton Roads area.

 

Rader is a multiple winner of the CIAA Broadcaster of the Year Award and has served as a television host for the Annual CIAA Basketball Tournament. Rader has received several honors that include Associated Press Best Sports Award (2002), Virginia United Press International Sportscaster of the Year, United Negro College Fund-District Leadership Award, and has been inducted into the Peninsula Baseball Hall of Fame.
