CIAA selects Male and Female Scholar-Athletes of the Year

Hampton, VA - The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association has announced the recipients of the Male and Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award; Ffion Fletcher of Shaw University and Luqman Jaaber of Virginia Union University. This honor, in its fourth year, rewards student-athletes who have excelled in the classroom and in the athletic arena.

Ffion Fletcher is a Junior Business Administration Major from Montego Bay, Jamaica. Ms. Fletcher was the Women’s Tennis Regular Season and Tournament Most Valuable Player. She went undefeated during her MVP Season with a 25-0 record. She also carries a hefty 4.0 grade point average.

Luqman Jaaber, a Senior Computer Science Major from Richmond was a member of the Virginia Union University National Championship Basketball Team. Jaaber, considered by many as one of the nation’s best point guards, led the nation in free throw percentage (89.9) and was eighth in the nation with five steals per game. The senior was named to the All-Elite Eight Tournament Team, All-South Atlantic Region, and All-CIAA. Jaaber, the 2004 Scholar-Athlete of the Year, has a 3.3 grade point average.

Both Fletcher and Jaaber will represent the CIAA as nominees for the Division II Conference Commissioners South Atlantic Region Male and Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year Awards. They will also be recognized at the 2005 CIAA Spring Awards Luncheon on May 26 in Raleigh.
