Contact Person: CIAA Tournament
Raleigh, NC - The Shaw University Lady Bears brutally defeated the Lady Blue
Bears of Livingstone College 66-34 in the quarterfinal round of the CIAA
Women’s Basketball Tournament at the RBC Center in Raleigh, NC.
Costly first half turnovers (19) and poor shooting (4-23) quickly dwindled
Livingstone’s chances of pulling off a major upset of the top-seeded team.
Livingstone held a brief 5-2 advantage in the game’s opening seven minutes
before SU scored 21 unanswered points to take a 23-5 lead with 4:01 to go in
the first half.
The Lady Blue Bears shot a dismal 17.4 percent from the field and only connected
on one of its seven free throw attempts in the first stanza. Despite only a
two point effort by CIAA Player of the Year Jessica Hawkins, the score was
a lopsided 30-9 in the victors’ favor at intermission.
Shaw enjoyed its biggest cushion, 59-22, on layup by Tameka Brown with 6:54
remaining.
“They played bad and we played bad,” said Shaw head coach Jacques Curtis. “It
wasn’t a very entertaining game.”
SU was led by junior forward Latasha Shipman who finished with 14 points, while
Hawkins managed to donate six on a disappointing 2-7 shooting night from the
field. Ten Lady Bears ended with at least four points.
Livingstone’s ship was captained by junior Chloe’ McInnis with 11 points and
15 rebounds.
Shaw, the reigning conference champions, advances to a semifinal match-up with
the Lady Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith University Friday at 3 p.m.
