RALEIGH, NC – The talk after the first round game between Bowie State University and Saint Augustine’s College was not about the final score, but whether or not Lady Bulldog junior Allyson Hardy scored 50 or 51 points. After a careful count of her 20 field goals, including six three pointers, along with four free throws, she finished with a career-high 50 points in Bowie State’s 84-60 victory over the Lady Falcons at the RBC Center in Raleigh, NC. “I only have one comment… Allyson Hardy,” said Saint Augustine’s head coach Antonio Davis. It was evident from the start that Hardy was going to have one of those special nights. She opened by scoring the game’s first eight points, and her three-pointer at the 10:59 mark gave the Lady Bulldogs an early 21-14 lead. Saint Augustine’s did not seemed rattled by Hardy’s good start, keeping pace with Bowie State. Two Valicia Brown free throws pulled the Lady Falcons to within 33-31 with 2:40 remaining before the intermission. Hardy’s excellent shooting paced Bowie State with 27 points and seven rebounds in the first, and Tatiana Johnson chipped in eight points. Monique Wright played well for the Lady Falcons, netting 10 of her team-high 15 points in opening stanza. Bowie State opened the second half on a 22-5 run, capped by Hardy’s 13th point of the spurt, making the score 70-50 with 7:47 remaining in the game. The Lady Falcons were not able to recover from Bowie State’s scoring outburst. The Lady Bulldogs increased their lead to a game-high 24 points on a pair of free throws by sophomore guard Kenyail Johnson at 3:48. Hardy hit 20-34 from the field including a coast-to-coast layup with four seconds left on the clock to reach the 50-point plateau. “We feel at Bowie State that we have the best player in the conference and one of the best players in the nation,” said Bowie State head coach Russell Davis. “She went out and proved that today.” BSU’s Tatiana Johnson ended with 13 points, eight rebounds, and five assists. Junior forward Dana Atkins scored 13 points and grabbed nine boards for Saint Augustine’s, while Brown had 12 points and eight rebounds in the loss.
