March 7, 2004

Virginia Union University's women's basketball team will face Lander University in the first round of the 2004 NCAA Tournament on March 13 in Raleigh, N.C.

The Lady Panthers return to the tournament for the first time since 1998. They gained an at-large bid with a 23-6 record after being defeated in the championship game of the CIAA Tournament by Shaw University.

VUU will enter the NCAA Tournament as the #6 seed in the South Atlantic Region, and Lander will be the #3 seed. Shaw, which is hosting the regional, is the top seed.

VUU last appeared in the tournament in 1998, when the Lady Panthers lost to Presbyterian 74-65 in the first round.

Virginia Union won the national title in 1983 and was the national runners-up in 1984.
