The CIAA Celebrates Its 2004 Spring Coaches of the Year

Hampton, VA…The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association’s Executive Committee convened once again to select this year’s CIAA Spring Coaches of the Year.

LaTaya Hilliard-Gray of Winston-Salem State University was selected as this year’s Softball Coach of the Year. Hilliard-Gray kept the Lady Rams at the top of the Western Division (8-0, 17-3, 20-9) for the second year in a row, heading into this year’s tournament. The Lady Rams are currently ranked 10th in the Mid-Atlantic Region as selected by the National Fast Pitch Coaches Association.

Elizabeth City State University’s Terrance Whittle has earned the title of Baseball Coach of the Year for 2004. The ECSU Vikings finished their regular season in second place after a dog-fight against the Virginia State University Trojans. With a record of (10-4, 21-13), Coach Whittle continues to lead the Vikings to an excellent finish.

Linda Person, Head Coach of the Virginia State University Lady Trojans has continued to keep her women’s squad in contention for the CIAA Championship. Person, Women’s Tennis Coach of the Year once again led the Lady Vikings into the CIAA Championship as 1st place finishers for the Eastern Division (10-0, 15-1, 16-1). Coach Person almost finished the season unscathed, giving up only one loss in regular season play.

Men’s Tennis Coach of the Year, Sunday Enitan of Shaw University, directed the Shaw Bears to an outstanding championship finish, landing one point shy of the CIAA Championship. Under Enitan’s leadership, the Bears ended the season in second place in the East (6-0, 13-1, 16-2).

Pete Hayes of North Carolina Central University has been honored as Golf Coach of the Year. His Eagles finished closely behind FSU as runners-up in this year’s CIAA Golf Championship, coming in second by 30 strokes.

Marc Harrison, chief of the Bowie State University Bulldogs’ Indoor Track & Field squad is named as the 2004 Women’s Indoor Track and Field Coach of the Year. This season, Coach Harrison has had three ladies to qualify for the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships.

Cliff Huff of Livingstone College will claim this year’s Men’s Indoor Track and Field Coach of the Year honor, once again bringing his team to the second place finish at this year’s championship. This year is Coach Huff’s last year as head coach; whereas he plans to work solely as the college’s Director of Athletics.

Johnson C. Smith University’s Jonathan Kelly has been named the 2004 Outdoor Women’s Track and Field Coach of the Year, having guided his team to a second place finish in this year’s championship. The Golden Bulls finished with a 90 point difference from the champion.

The Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Coach of the Year is George Williams. The USA Track and Field Coach from St. Augustine’s College once again celebrates this honor as his Falcons captured another CIAA Championship.

The 2003-2004 CIAA Coaches of the Year will be honored at the Annual CIAA Coach of the Year Luncheon on May 27, 2004 at the Raleigh Marriott Crabtree Valley in Raleigh, NC.
