OLD WESTBURY, NY- The women of the CIAA topped the NYCAC 86-67, while the CIAA men fell to the hosts 102-85 Saturday on the campus of Long Island University-C.W. Post. In the women’s game, the first half was paced by Annie Deroy (JC Smith) who scored 12 points. The NYCAC would found themselves down by as many as 14 but would cut the lead to 6 (39-33) at the break. In the second half, the CIAA would dominate as Tiona Beatty (NC Central) scored 15 of her game high 20, as they would outscore the NYCAC 47-34. The largest margin would come courtesy of a 3-pointer by Quisannah Noel (St. Paul’s) with 2:58 remaining in the game. Noel would finish the game with 16 points followed by Deroy with 15. Alonna Marable (Virginia State) and Monique Wright (St. Augustine’s) contributed double-doubles, both scoring 14 with Marable collecting 15 boards to Wright’s 12. Tatiana Johnson (Bowie State) finished with 7 points and 13 rebounds. Deroy, a native of Brooklyn, NY, was named MVP for her 15 point, 9 rebound, 4 assist, 5 steal and 1 blocked shot performance. The NYCAC was paced by Shelia Jackson (C.W. Post) with 16 points while Melissa Danchaski (Dowling) and Jean Marie Reilly (Philadelphia) contributed 15 and 14 points, respectively. In game 2, the NYCAC had six players score in double figures as they outran the CIAA 102-85. The CIAA dug themselves a hole from the start, missing 9 of their first 12 shots from the floor. On the other hand, the NYCAC didn’t miss a beat shooting 46% from the field and taking a 46-36 lead into the intermission. The second half began in similar fashion, as the NYCAC would push the lead to 16 with 16:27 remaining. The CIAA finally came to alive going on a 21-5 run which was capped by 2 free throws by Nate Fields (Bowie State) to tie the game at 65. After a Troy Mills (Dowling) jumper put his team up by 2, the CIAA took its first lead on a 3-pointer by Allen Van Norden (Bowie State), 68-67. Then as quickly as the CIAA offense came, it went as the NYCAC outscored the CIAA 30-8 over the final 6 minutes of the game. Van Norden led all scorers with 22 points while Willie Martin (JC Smith) contributed 16 points. Kenny Haywood (Fayetteville State) added a double double of 12 points and 11 rebounds with Fields chipping in with 10. Jye Watson (LIU-Southampton) led the NYCAC with 18 points followed by (Bridgeport) with 17.
