Livingstone Head Track & Field Coach Clifton Huff Calls it a Career

April 19, 2004

Salisbury, NC – When the Livingstone College Men’s and Women’s Track teams traveled to Charlotte, North Carolina last weekend (April 16-17) to compete in the CIAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, it marked the first stop of the “farewell tour” for Head Coach Clifton Huff. Huff is announcing that after thirteen seasons, he is retiring as head coach of the Livingstone track programs to focus on his first responsibility as Director of Athletics.

After returning to his Alma Mater and taking over as coach in 1991, Huff has built Livingstone’s track program into a conference and national contender. During his tenure, Huff produced thirty-five NCAA All-Americans, 110 All-CIAA performers and 25 CIAA Individual-event Champions. The only thing that has eluded the track program is a team title. His teams has been CIAA Runner-ups 15 times and has placed among the conference’s top three 21 times. At the NCAA Division II National Championships, his teams have placed in the top 25 five times. However, Huff states that his biggest success that he has had a 100% graduation rate on all his four-year student-athletes; something that he prides himself in.

“I know people think that I am too young to retire. I feel that I need to focus more on the overall development of our athletic programs. I have a very supportive president and administration. Now is the best time to try to rebuild and return our athletic programs to the prominence we had in the late 90’s. I believe assistant head coach Adrian Ferguson will take over and do a great job and take the track program to the next level. I want to thank all the student-athletes who have allowed me to coach them and all the coaches who have helped me over the years and my family for their patience. I have had the time of my life,” declares Huff.
