2004 CIAA INDOOR TRACK CHAMPIONSHIPS TO BE HELD AT CHRISTOPHER NEWPORT UNIVERSITY

February 10, 2004

Newport News, Va.- The 29th Annual CIAA Indoor Track Championships will take place on February 11 at Christopher Newport University’s Freeman Center. The festivities will commence at 12 noon with the Men’s Pole Vault.

At the 2003 Indoor Championships, St. Augustine’s College (SAC) men and women swept the field, defeating their opponents by 88 and 79 points respectively. Maria Medina of SAC, last year’s Championship MVP, is back this year to try to lead her team to another championship. As for the men, SAC will attempt to make history again. At last year’s championships, SAC set a facility record in the 4x400 meter relay, running a swift 3:16.04. The SAC Men’s and Women’s teams went on to compete in the NCAA Division II Indoor Track Championships. The men scored 73 points to take first place, and the women placed fifth with 32 points. North Carolina Central University’s (NCCU) men and women, and Virginia State University’s (VSU) women also attended the NCAA Division II Indoor Track Championships.

Along with the excitement of SAC Men’s and Women’s team looking to repeat as champions, Sophomore Robert DeVaul of Bowie State University (BSU) looks to repeat his first place performance in the Men’s High Jump. Jason Smoots of NCCU also looks to have his name back in the record books. At the 2003 NCAA Indoor Track Championships, Smoots set a meet record for the 60 meter dash with a time of 6.55. Smoots said he thought he should have run faster. All eyes will be on Smoots to see if he will sign his name in the record books again.
