Shaw, St. Aug, VSU and ECSU to Play in Carolina Freedom Classic

Men's basketball teams from Elizabeth City State and Virginia State and men's and women's teams from Shaw and St. Augustine's will meet as part of the Carolina Freedom Classic, Friday, January 16, 2004 at the RBC Center in Raleigh.

The “Classic” action will tip off at 5:00pm as the defending CIAA Champion Shaw University Lady Bears take on the Saint Augustine’s College Lady Falcons. The evening will continue with the Vikings and Trojans at 7:00pm and conclude with the Bears and Falcons at 9:00pm.

The Carolina Freedom Classic is a collegiate basketball festival being held to celebrate the contributions of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and others who have dedicated their lives to the fight for equality for people in America. This year’s festival, which takes the place the weekend of Dr. King’s birthday, will feature a basketball triple-header with both the men’s and women’s teams from Shaw University and Saint Augustine’s College and the men’s squads from Virginia State and Elizabeth City State.

The contest between ECSU and VSU was originally scheduled to be played January 10th in Petersburg, VA as part of a standard women’s/men’s CIAA double-header at 5:30pm and 7:30pm. The Lady Vikings will still face the Trojanettes at 5:30pm in Daniel Gymnasium on the campus of Virginia State University on January 10th.

Shaw was originally scheduled to play St Augustine's on January 17 at Dorton Arena at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m., respectively.
