Virginia State and Shaw Advance to Softball Championship Game

April 27, 2003

Charlotte, NC - After two days of rain, which resulted in suspended play, six teams emerged on the softball field with hopes of advancing to the championship game. Of those six, only two were able to accomplish that feat.

The #4 seeded Virginia State Trojanettes and #1 seeded Shaw Lady Bears, both of the Eastern Division, advanced to the 2003 CIAA Softball Championship game. The game will be played in Durham, NC on Wednesday, April 30, 2003 at 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm (if necessary).

In the first contest on Sunday, Shaw defeated North Carolina Central, 10-1. On Thursday, the same teams met in the first round and NCCU defeated Shaw. Shaw came out looking for a win and accomplished what they set out to do.

Winston-Salem State defeated Elizabeth City State, 8-0, advancing to play the Lady Bears at 12:30 pm. When the Lady Rams took on the Lady Bears, Shaw jumped out early and never looked back, giving WSSU their second loss of the double elimination tournament, 10-2.

In the first game of the semi-finals, it was the battle of the undefeated teams, Virginia State and Fayetteville State. The Lady Trojans of VSU dominated the game and defeated the Lady Broncos, 10-0, advancing to the championship game.

After the loss, FSU moved on the play Shaw to decide who would face VSU in the championship game. Coming into the game, both teams had recorded one loss earlier in the tournament and the winner would move on to the championship game. The Lady Bears were victorious, defeating the Lady Broncos, 10-0, setting up the meeting with VSU for the conference championship in Durham, NC at Valley Spring Park.
