CIAA Concludes First Day of Softball Championship Play with Top Seeded Upsets

April 23, 2003

Charlotte, NC… The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association hosted its first day of Softball Championship play at the Charlotte Hornet’s Nest today, with upsets of two top seeded teams. Shaw University, the Eastern Division regular season champion, matched up against the West’s fourth-seeded North Carolina Central University, where the Lady Eagles were able to put away the Lady Bear’s 4-2 and move to round two.

Virginia State University was able to pull off the biggest upset of the day against Winston-Salem State, the West’s top seed. The Lady Rams had the lead in the second and fifth inning, but celebrated too soon. Errors in the field caused WSSU to lose grip of the game in addition to the Lady Trojan’s surge, scoring all of their runs in the top of the seventh; final score 4-3 VSU.

Saint Augustine’s College couldn’t hold off Elizabeth City State University, where an error by the Lady Falcons caused the winning run to score. In the loser’s bracket, Shaw and Winston-Salem State were able to pull off victories to the quarterfinal rounds. Both FSU and VSU advance to Saturday’s play undefeated (2-0) in championship play.
