2003 Division II Women's Tennis: GC\&SU 9, Fayetteville State 0May 2, 2003MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. -- Georgia College \& State University and Kennesaw State University advanced to the championship match of the NCAA Division II Women's Tennis Mid-Atlantic Regional after winning their respective opening round matches Friday at the Centennial Center Tennis Facility. GC\&SU (20-3) cruised past Fayetteville State (15-9) 9-0, while Kennesaw State (13-4) edged USC Spartanburg (15-8) 5-3. In the first match, the Bobcats got off to a great start by sweeping the three doubles matches. GC\&SU's Luiza Biktyakova and Mia Paavilainen defeated Fayetteville State's Mary Cherry and Brahsheedah Elohim 8-1 at No. 1, while Caroline Lefevre and Anna Shchupak defeated Keli Campbell and Roshawannah Clark 8-0 at No. 2 doubles. Kremena Vassileva and Annika Persson completed the sweep at No. 3 with an 8-1 win over Annette Jackson and Christa Leggette. In singles play, Biktyakova blanked Cherry 6-0;6-0 at No.1, and Shchupak picked up the clinching fifth point with a 6-1;6-0 win over Jackson at No.4. The remaining matches were permitted to continue since they would not delay the next match. GC\&SU's Lefevre defeated Clark 6-1;6-1 at No. 2 , while Paavilainen also picked up a straight sets win with a 6-0;6-0 victory over Elohim at No.3 singles. Persson defeated Campbell 6-0;6-0 at No. 5, and Vassileva completed the sweep with a 6-0;6-1 at No. 6 singles. In the second match, USC Spartanburg took an early 2-1 lead after the doubles matches, but Kennesaw State rallied to win four singles matches and advance to Saturday's final. The Rifles picked up an 8-3 win at No.1 doubles as Zarah DeSilva and Marcela Gonzalez knocked off KSU's Laura Puch and Carolyn Ward. The Rifles also won 8-3 at No. 3 doubles where Kristina Ribicic and Paloma Castillo defeated Jessica Fischetti and Mari Rubert. The Owls picked up a point at No. 2 doubles as Kamilla Rodriguez and Loraine Rosmuller paired up for an 8-1 win over Nina Lesnanska and Martina Stoklaskova. In singles play, KSU's Puch defeated Gonzalez 6-1;6-1 at the No. 1 spot, while Rosmuller knocked off Stoklaskova 6-0;6-1 at No. 2. After USC Spartanburg's Lesnanska defeated Rodriguez 6-1;6-3 at No. 5 singles to knot the score at 3-all, KSU's Megan George defeated USC Spartanburg's Ribicic 6-4;6-2 at No.6 to give the Owls a chance to clinch with two matches remaining. Mari Rubert picked up the final point for KSU with a 7-5;6-3 win over Castillo at No. 4 singles to end the match. The Bobcats and Owls will play the championship match Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Centennial Center Tennis Facility.
