Fayetteville State and Virginia State Separated By Single Point in Women's Tennis Championship

April 24, 2003

Charlotte, NC - At the conclusion of the first day of competition at the 2003 CIAA Women's Tennis Championship, Fayetteville State and Virginia State have put on a show for the ages as they would meet in all three doubles championship matches, with the Lady Trojans emerging victorious at first and third doubles.

The Lady Trojans and Lady Broncos would take center stage, with 23 and 22 points respectively, however, not to be outdone, three other teams would find themselves knotted in a three-way tie for fourth place with 12 points each.

The third place team, North Carolina Central, would narrowly avoid being part of that tie as they tallied 13 points on the afternoon to place them alone at third in the overall points standings after day one.

The Lady Trojans captured the championship at first doubles as Lopez and Saunders defeated FSU's Cherry and Elohim, 8-4. Second doubles would go in favor of the Lady Broncos as Clark and Campbell defeated VSU's Barnes and Buckner, 8-4. The third doubles match would flip-flop in favor of the Lady Trojans again, thus earning them the narrow one-point scoring lead, when Richards and Pegues of Virginia State defeated Fayetteville's Jackson and Leggett by the score of 8-4.

The Lady Broncos and Lady Trojans will again be the favorites heading into day two of competition, but challenges will come from North Carolina Central who sits in third place, and Shaw, Elizabeth City State, and Johnson C. Smith who are in a three-way tie for fourth place with 12 points each.

Day two action will again take place at Hornet's Nest Park, weather permitting, starting at 9:00 am. Should weather pose a problem, the singles competition will be moved indoors to the Charlotte Indoor Tennis Club's indoor tennis facility.
