CHARLOTTE, NC -- Saint Augustine's College captured its seventh consecutive women's team title and sixth straight men's team title at the 2003 CIAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships on a chilly and damp Saturday at the Irwin Belk Complex in Charlotte, NC.
The St. Augustine's women scored 209 points, the highest team total in three years, while Shaw University and Virginia State University tied for second place with 95 points each.
The St. Augustine's men had its toughest competition since last losing the title in 1997, edging second place Livingstone College by a score of 191 to 144.5. Virginia State took third place with 88 points.
Libia Rodriquez of St. Augustine's was recognized as the Most Outstanding Female Track Athlete after winning the 200-meter (23.91) and 400m (53.90) dashes, placing second in the 100m dash (12.12), and running on the victorious 4x100m and 4x400m relay squads. Teammate Cadriesha Akinfe won the triple jump (12.38m) and placed second in the long jump (5.73m) to earn her second straight Most Outstanding Female Field Athlete award.
Livingstone sprinter Jordan Vaden won the 100m (10.53) and 200m (21.02) dashes to reclaim the Most Outstanding Male Track Athlete honor, while fellow Blue Bear Patrick Wright was selected as the Most Outstanding Male Field Athlete after winning both the shot put (45' 4.75") and discus throw (140' 1").
Nine CIAA student-athletes repeated as conference champions during this year's event. Among them, three men won their fourth consecutive CIAA individual title - Dujuan Williams of Virginia State in the javelin throw (167' 10"), Garrye Chavis of St. Augustine's in the 800m run (1:58.36), and Alhaji Alhassan of St. Augustine's in the 5000m run (15:49.16). Virginia Union's Krystal Pasley captured her third straight conference championship in the discus throw (131' 7") and also won this year's shot put (37' 7.75").
Other repeat champions were Shamea Hall of Saint Paul's College in the javelin throw (32.29m), Akinfe in the triple jump, Samaiyah Islam of St. Augustine's in the 100m hurdles (14.05), Rodriquez in the 400m dash, Vaden in the 200m dash and Adrian Findley of St. Augustine's in the 400m hurdles (50.33).
